Defying Forever! Pt. 8
|
His eyes snapped open with a pop. Memories of the night before came rushing in.
He glanced at the door and listened for the girl inside. She was asleep again, her heartbeat beating steadily.
He had to hunt before he allowed himself to be near her but he was not sure he could leave the door. He stood by the door for a while not sure as to what he could do.
Finally with the agony of his fangs breaking through his gums he decided he could not risk harming her. He stuffed the key in his pocket and made his way to the end of the hall where he leaped from the window.
Surely she would e alright for the next hour.
In less than an hour he was back in the mansion having come through the same window he had left.
He strode down the hallway ready to see Anna and then on to talk to his parents. Hopefully they would forgive him for running away.
He stopped abruptly when he noticed the door to his room was slightly cracked. He had left it locked! What ever kind of heart he had stopped in his chest at that moment as he rushed through the door.
Anna was now sitting up in bed speaking avidly to a young woman whose looks had not changed in the hundred and twenty-twenty three years she had been alive. Her long copper hair still shone brightly and her eyes remained their smoky gray eyes still retained their color. One this that was different from the way he remembered her was now the slight and barley noticeable bulge in her stomach. His mother was pregnant and she was speaking to Anna.
Both women looked up at Vayden as he entered the room.
His mother smiled and stood. “Vayden,” she breathed coming forward to hug him tightly.
He was slightly shocked at this. He had remembered plenty of embraces and showing of love when he was younger but as he had gotten older those had became fewer until none at all.
She gripped his face with both hands. “Don’t you ever put me through something like that ever again!” she said venomously.
He smiled slightly. Maybe he had been wrong about his mother’s love all those years. “Sorry mother. It was just something I had to do,”
She shook her head. “Do you know what torture you put me through?” she demanded.
“Guess I wasn’t really thinking,” he replied glancing up to Anna.
She was staring with wide eyed shock at them. “She’s your mother?”
He smiled and came to sit beside her on the bed and placed a kiss upon her brow. “Yes she is.”
“But…she looks only s few years older than you!”
Elva smiled. “Thank you dear. I appreciate the compliment. It’s true I feel like I’ve been alive for oh…a hundred years,” she gave a smile.
Anna chuckled and shook her head.
“Vayden will you please come with me. I need to speak to you,”
He nodded and turned to Anna. “I will be back in a few minutes.”
She sighed and nodded. He grinned and placed a light kiss against her lips before standing, following his mother from the room and locking the door behind him.
“You know that will not keep anyone from her if they choose to get near her. I could smell her before I entered your room,” his mother commented.
He nodded. “Maybe once they notice it’s locked they know she is in my care and will not bother her. How did you get by the lock anyway?”
She smiled. “I have the spare key.”
He laughed and shook his head but then he frowned. “I shouldn’t have brought her here. You did not tell her did you? She does not know what we are.”
She shook her head. “No I did not tell her. She would think I was crazy and once she figured out I wasn’t kidding she would most likely have a fit that would bring the whole mansion to her. And no you should not have brought her! What were you thinking Vayden bringing a mortal here in a vampire’s home?”
He ran his hands across his face. “I know but I wasn’t sure how long I would be gone and I couldn’t leave her there. I didn’t want to be away from her for that time.”
She smiled a sad smile. “You love her,” it was not a question.
He nodded. “I do but I don’t know what I can do. I believe she could accept the fact that I’m a vampire and maybe get used to the idea of it. But…I don’t know about changing her. Would she like being a vampire?”
“You can never know. And it is not for certain that she will actually change. The only one we can be certain about is the woman who holds the special blood type. Others it is a matter of fate.”
“You mean it is not certain that she would change but there’s a chance she could…” he could not say the word.
His mother nodded gravely. “She could die,”
His eyes closed and he shook his head. ‘’I don’t know what to do.”
“Let’s not worry about that now. Right now I know your father wants to see you. He’s in the library.”
He glanced back to the door to where Anna awaited him.
His mother placed a hand upon his arm. “She will be fine alone for a while.”
He nodded. “Alright,” he followed her down the hall. “It seems I’ve missed out on some things,” he commented glancing pointedly at her growing stomach.
She smiled and placed her hands on her stomach. “I found out only days after you left.”
He nodded. They had reached the door to the library and he allowed his mother to precede him into the library.
His father sat in one of the chairs looking calm and relaxed while reading.
His mother grabbed his hand and squeezed it in reassurance.
“Elva I was wondering…why does—“he stopped for he had looked up.
“Vayden?” he questioned standing.
Elva smiled and came forward to Demetris. “He returned last night right before dawn.”
Demetris shook his head. “I don’t understand. Why did you leave? Especially without telling us!” he demanded.
Vayden sighed and sat in one of the chairs. His father resumed his seat and his mother chose to sit on the arm of his father’s chair.
“I didn’t feel as though I belonged here,” Vayden began.
Both parents’ brows furrowed in confusion.
“I can’t explain it. It was like no one cared. I was just another child of the king and queen and that was it. Everyone else was fine with what they were and who they are but I just felt…like there was no purpose for me,”
“And now that has changed,” his mother whispered, again not a question.
He nodded and replied just a quietly. “Yes,”
His father looked back and forth between them. “Is there something I’m missing?”
Elva gave Vayden a stern look before looking to her husband. “Vayden has fallen in love. He brought her here,”
His father smiled and opened his mouth to say something but Elva cut him off.
“She’s a mortal,”
The smile vanished as quickly as it had come. Demetris stormed to his feet. “What?!” he demanded. “Do you know what you’ve done? Do you realize how you’ve endangered that poor girl’s life? How could you be so ridiculous? Has life away from here caused you to take a leave of your senses? Vayden…” he stopped his tirade of words when Elva placed her hand gently on his arm and shook her head.
Demetris sighed. “Vayden…she must be frightened out of her mind,”
Both Vayden and Elva shook their head simultaneously.
Demetris cocked an eyebrow.
“She doesn’t know…about us,” Vayden admitted looking at his feet.
Demetris remained silent, the full blow of his fury reflected in his eyes. His hands formed fists at his side and he clenched his teeth.
“Vayden…” he growled.
Vayden flinched at the ice in his father’s voice.
Even if he had not been before he was most definitely a disgrace now.
“How do you plan on keeping what you are a secret for much longer? In a house of vampires no one knows what could happen!”
As he said this he had made his way over to the stone wall and with the last word his fist drove into the wall. The rocks crumpled leaving a deep hole in the wall.
“Goodness,” clucked Elva shaking her head. “Demetris if you insist on destroying something every time you get angry we will be homeless within the year.”
Demetris looked at the newly formed hole for a moment as if just seeing it then turned with a shake of his head.
“Are you going to try to change her?” he demanded of Vayden.
Vayden looked up startled. He had not even thought about it really. “I…I don’t know,” he replied quietly.
“Well if you do you must face the consequences. If she does change successfully then there’s nothing to worry about. On the other hand if it is not meant for her to be one of us then you must live with her death. Which is better; not seeing her but knowing she is alive and happy or…living without her and knowing her death was your fault?”
“Or being together with her forever,” Vayden said anger in his eyes.
Demetris was silent, seething.
“I’ll tell her,” Vayden said so silent that even with his parent’s super hearing it was hard for them to make out the words.
“What?” questioned Elva.
“I’ll tell her...maybe she’ll become accustomed to the idea of it then,” he paused. “I’ll let her decide. If she wants to leave then I’ll take her back if she wants to try the changing then…well I’ll have to think about that,” Vayden stood.
Elva embraced him. “It’s good to have you home,” she whispered.
He smiled slightly and turned no longer wanting to stand there under his father’s angry glare.
He stepped out into the hallway and sighed. Maybe he had been wrong those months ago when he left. Maybe they really loved him…well his mother did anyway. His father…he was not so sure.
He rubbed a hand across his face and made his way down the hallway. He had a long night ahead of him.
