(ALDEN’S P.O.V)
“She’ll remember all basic things like speaking, reading, writing, but her name, age, who she is, where she is, who she was, any childhood memories will all be gone,” the doctor’s voice was just a light whisper behind the sound of the blood rushing to Alden’s head.
“If she does f-forget who she is,” began Dane. “Is there any chance of her ever regaining it?”
“Of course,” replied the doctor. “It can be triggered by anything. A familiar face, her favorite song, a childhood memory…but there is always the chance that she…will not regain it.”
Dane nodded and turned to look at his unconscious daughter. “Do you expect her to wake anytime soon?”
“No one can be certain. Just keep talking to her like you would do if she was awake. She could wake in a week; it could be five years or maybe even never. No one can be certain but you’re not the only one who can help her wake. She has to want it too. It’s like in her mind she’s fighting to wake up.”
Dane nodded. “Thank you doctor.”
The doctor extended his hand and shook Dane’s. “I hate to bring bad news but I wanted to be truthful to you…”
Dane nodded. With a sad smile the doctor left them alone to deal with the fact that the girl they both loved would not know them and not be able to love them in return.
In six days the most magnificent thing happened giving both Alden and Dane hope.
In all the time he had been here, he had not once left the hospital never willing to leave Clary’s side. As much as Dane tried to get Alden to at least go to the Hamilton’s home to rest, he still would not go.
It was nine in the morning on the sixth day. Alden was once again in the chair at Clary’s side, Dane had gone to get them both something to eat.
Clary’s hand twitched around his but he did not look up for that had been another one of the many movements she had done in the past week he had been there. Sure he had expected the movement to be nothing but what he did not expect was for her hand to remove itself from his.
He looked up sharply to see Clary’s clear blue eyes gazing at him in confusion. Her eyes glanced frantically about the room.
“Clary?” he whispered.
Her eyes flashed back to him. “Where am I?” she questioned her voice hoarse from nonuse.
“You’re in the hospital Clary. You’ve been in a comma for about a week,” he explained.
“Who?” she asked quietly.
“Who what?”
“Who is Clary?”
His blood ran cold at her question. “That’s you. You’re Clarice Hamilton.”
She was silent as she looked away from him and gazed about the room again. “And who are you?”
“I’m Alden Archer. I’m your…I’m your good friend.”
She looked at him again and he felt like weeping. She really did not remember him. He could the confusion and disorientation clearly written across her face.
At that moment the door opened and Dane walked in carrying a bag of McDonalds food. He looked up to see Alden standing over Clary and gasped dropping the food and immediately running forward clearly intent on hugging Clary but as he neared she scooted away. Her eyes were wary and her brow furrowed.
“Clary,” Dane whispered placing his hand atop hers. She pulled away and tears sprung in Dane’s eyes. “You don’t know who I am do you?”
She shook her head.
Dane sniffed and a tear fell free from his eye. “I’m your daddy baby girl. I’m the man who raised you.”
She remained silent.
“I’m going to go tell the doctor she’s awake,” whispered Alden brokenly.
Dane nodded his eyes never leaving his daughter. Dane’s hand rose with the urge to touch Clary’s face as if to check and see if she was real or not but he slowly and gently placed it back down.
Alden made his way from the room, his heart feeling heavy. The girl he loved was finally awake but now would he ever get to know if she ever loved him in return?
