“Elva! Come on Elva wake up!” the voice called urging her to wake up. She could hear the urgency in its voice but she ignored it wanting it to go away. She just wanted to stay there and sleep forever.
She moaned and turned her head. “That’s it my girl open your eyes.”
Her eyes parted and she blinked a couple of times. There staring down at her cradling her head was Delandron. His cheeks were sunken in and he looked weary and older than what he actually was.
“What happened,” she croaked.
“You were brought in here while I was passed out from my last test. I woke and saw you here and woke you.”
“Where is here?” she asked sitting up. He provided what little help he could. She gazed around at the large cell they were contained in. The walls made of thick stone and on the farthest wall deep grooves where it looked as though they had been chopped away. She realized with a start that Delandron had probably done that trying to escape but it appeared the walls were thick enough to prevent that.
“What is this place?” she asked.
“It’s where the vampire hunters keep the vampire’s contained for when they have need of them.”
“Need of them?”
He sighed. “They experiment on vampires here. As for what I can tell they’re trying to come up with a way to return us to our human forms.”
“Is that possible?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know but they’re certainly trying.” He grimaced slightly. “I should know.”
He looked away. “Treated me like an animal. They feed me one animal every night through a hole in the door and mostly with the experiments they take my blood,” he explained showing her his arms which were scared with small white dots all across them.
Her eyes widened. “They did that to you?”
He nodded but his eyes became suddenly brighter. “But enough about that for now. It appears I have missed more than I realized,” he said smiling giving a pointed glance at her stomach.
She smiled and placed her hand across it. “Yes,” her smile faded. “But now that I’m here I’m afraid this will not be a happy birth.”
“How far along are you?”
“Over eight months.”
He grimaced. “That means the baby could be born any day now.”
She nodded.
“I see what you mean by not a happy birth because I heard the men talking earlier about how they had never known a vampire to reproduce and…”he paused as if indecisive of whether or not to tell her what he was about to say.
“What?” she questioned dread filling her body.
“They want to experiment on it,” he finished finally.
“No!” she gasped in horror. “Not my baby!”
He wrapped her in a fatherly hug as awful images of what they could do to her baby began to play in her head and the tears began to fall. “If I know my son then I’m sure he’s right now thinking of any possible way to get you guys out of here and I promise I will also try my best to get us out of here.”
She nodded burying her face into his shoulder. She pulled back and wiped the tears away then she noticed something wasn’t right. She gazed down at her left hand and gasped. Her ring was gone.
“Oh no!”
“What is it?” questioned Delandron.
“My ring,” she said looking around the room and not seeing it. “It’s gone.”
“I don’t believe they took it.”
“This is awful! I’ve been captured by vampire hunters and my baby is expected any time and they want to experiment on it! And on top of it all I’ve lost my wedding ring and not even a year into the marriage!”
Delandron chuckled lightly and patted her on her back shaking his head.
*MEANWHILE*
Back at the mansion Demetris was on a rampage. His wife was no where to be found and now he had just received news that someone had seen her leave the mansion.
He was pacing the floor of his father’s study when his mother finally chose to come meet him.
“Where have you been!” he yelled grabbing her tightly by her shoulders. “You were supposed to be here to watch over Elva for me!”
“Calm down Demetris. You said she said earlier that she thought about going out to hunt again so when she couldn’t find me so maybe that’s where she is,” his mother suggested.
Demetris shook his head frantically. “I had men search the entire forest for her!”
His mother was about to reply when there came a light rap on his door.
“Whoever it is, you better have information concerning my wife!” he shouted.
The man entered looking positively frightened. None who lived here had ever seen their prince in such a rage. “Sir, I found this in the forest. It looks like the one your wife wore,” he added.
Demetris rushed forward and took the tiny round object from the man’s fingers. Dirt now coated it but there was no mistaking what it was. Elva’s wedding ring. “Where did you find this?” he demanded.
The man was about to reply when he was interrupted again by another knock on the door. This person did not wait for permission to enter.
“Sir there seems to be a situation outside.”
Demetris groaned. He did not need this right now! “What sort of situation.”
The man cleared his throat. “Well the other vampires seem to be waiting outside the gate for…”
“Why is everyone outside!”
The other began shaking his head. “No you don’t understand. I said other vampires but I didn’t mean the ones from the mansion.”
“Then what did you…” he trailed off it immediately clicking. “You mean the vampires who left all those year ago are standing outside right now at this moment in time.”
The man nodded.
He sighed and looked to the vampire who had found Elva’s ring. “You stay here, I’ll be back shortly. Mother stay with him to make sure he does not go anywhere.”
She nodded and sat down in the chair he had recently evacuated.
“Lead the way,” he ordered the man who had informed him about the others.
Within moments they stood by the large metal gate where outside about twenty pale faces looked through the bars at him and to his shock one-by-one they all bowed to him.
One stepped forward and he immediately took this one to be the one who led them.
“Prince Demetris,” he bowed his head.
Demetris nodded his head in return feeling so confused.
“I am Rendolio and I am currently leader of these but I realize I can no longer be that leader to them,” the vampire Rendolio paused. “We come in news of you wife and wish to help.”
“Why?”
“Because after you got married and news of your wife’s pregnancy reached our ears we began to feel hope. You see, as our numbers have been dwindling faster than if we had stayed where we belong and we lost all hope of survival. We wish to rejoin you, and help you in your search. We even have information retaining your wife if you wish it.”
“You wish to rejoin here?”
The vampire nodded. “We realized our mistake in leaving.”
And Demetris knew he was telling the truth from the look in his eyes. There was anguish and pain that went deeper than he could understand in them.
“What is this information about Elva?”
“Two of my vampires were hunting in the woods near here when they saw your wife land from flying—how that’s possible I’ll never know—but she had begun walking when three men emerged and injected some sort of liquid into her body which knocked her unconscious. Then they dragged her away to an old ware house that is a few miles away from here.”
“How do you know this for sure?”
“It’s like I said. A couple of mine were hunting in the woods even though we knew we were not supposed to. When thy dragged her away they followed.”
“Why did they not help her?! She is one of you!” he pointed out becoming suddenly angry.
Rendolio bowed his head. “I’m sorry. If it was me and I had known who she was I would have helped but the ones who witnessed it are young and were afraid of the strange liquid they put in her body.”
“Why do you not tell me who these are?”
“Because they are ashamed and frightened for their existence. Let’s just let them be; but we are here to make up for these years of wrong. We should have never put the pressure on you and trusted in the king and queen’s judgment that she would come along eventually.”
Demetris was silent and thoughtful for a moment. “You will help me?” he questioned.
Rendolio nodded and smiled. “And if you do not mind, I have a few ideas in returning your wife home.”
Demetris smiled liking the sound of that. Yes he was bringing his wife and his child home and he did not care if a few human’s had to die in turn to bring her home.
