Elva was now eight months along and she felt awful. It seemed vampire babies had more energy in the womb than human babies. She had been up more and more lately from the baby’s constant kicking. Her body felt as if it had been swollen in all places and she was constantly in pain or sleeping. She was continually reminding herself that it would only be a couple more weeks and she would have brought a wonderful baby into the world that was hers.
Demetris had been wonderful to her in the time since he had learned of her pregnancy. He was constantly by her side when he could be and was there when she needed him most. Other times he spent working on hunting for his father and the vampire hunters who had taken him but no such luck and as time progressed his hope dimmed but he never gave up.
She sighed suddenly losing interest in the book she had been reading. At that moment the door of her and Demetris’s room burst open and Demetris stepped in.
He stopped when he saw her lounging languishingly in one of the red plush chairs, feet propped up and book in hand.
“Hello,” she greeted with a smile.
“Hello. I thought you were asleep?” he said dispersing of the jacket he wore from his latest search for his father and the vampire hunters.
“I don’t sleep all the time you know?” she said rolling her eyes.
He smiled and crouched down next to her. “Of course not all the time. Just most of the time.” He chuckled and lifted her shirt slightly to kiss her bulging stomach. “And how is my little guy?”
“Been kicking up a storm and what makes you think it’s a boy?”
“By his strength of course. Just feel that kick of his!”
She snorted. “I have been. Every minute of everyday. She’s,” she said emphasizing the word. “Quiet a kicker.”
He laughed and stood, kissing her lips. “Alright, I don’t care what it is as long as it’s healthy and ours.”
“I’m still keeping fingers crossed for a girl!” she shouted at him when the door shut and his chuckle met her ears before he turned on the shower.
Minutes later he emerged his hair damp and droplets of water glistening from his pale skin, a towel the only thing covering his bottom half. He went to the closet and returned fully dressed in black jeans and a black t-shirt that fit snuggly to his chest emphasizing his muscles.
He gazed down at her in concern. “Do you need anything?”
She shook her head. “No I’m fine. I think I may need to go hunting later though, I don’t think a rabbit is a very sufficient meal for me and the baby.”
He nodded. “Alright but take mother with you. I don’t want you to go alone,” He paused. “Are you sure you’re alright? Your stomach looks a bit larger than I thought it would be at this point.”
She crossed her arms. “Well thank you! Where are you going?”
“Hmmm,” he looked up from her stomach. “What makes you think I’m going somewhere?”
“Well the only time you don’t go hunting with me is when you have to go somewhere.”
He looked away, sat down in the chair across from her and began putting his shoes on. “I think I may have figured out where the vampire hunters are and I’m taking a couple of others with me and we’re going to go check the place out. I might not be able to return till tomorrow night.”
She frowned. “Shouldn’t you not take such a risk?”
“It’s the only thing we can do,” he said standing and walking to her to place his hand on each armrest to lean over her.
“Don’t worry about me. I know what I’m doing.”
She remained silent but accepted his kiss.
“I love you,” he said.
She sighed. “I love you too and be careful!”
He smiled, straightened up, then was gone.
Moments after he had gone Elva pushed herself from her chair deciding it was pointless to sit there and worry about him and decided to try and find Elizabeth so she may hunt again.
When she looked in both Elizabeth’s room and study and could not find her. When she asked the first vampire she saw they explained that she had left earlier but had told no one where she was going.
Elva sighed in frustration. Where in the world could have Elizabeth went to? She hadn’t mentioned needing to go anywhere.
Elva stood there in the middle of the hall contemplative. Surely one hunt alone would not be too dangerous. Just this once. Her mind made up she turned on her heel and headed in the direction of the door that let to the outdoors.
An hour later found her feeling fully satisfied with the body of a deer lying at her feet completely drained of all the blood in its body.
She began walking back in the direction toward the mansion thoughts of where her friend Elizabeth could be at, at that moment. With a pang of guilt her thought turned to her old friend Sarah for the first time since she had been changed.
Sarah must have been angry to wake up to a note saying she had left then no letter’s no phone calls. Nothing,
Elva felt like the worst best friend in the world at that moment.
Elva looked up to the darkened sky to realize there were still hours left of night and judging by the distance she had seen on some of her earlier flight’s it couldn’t possibly be no more than an hour’s flight to the city.
Feeling spontaneous Elva brought forth her wings and hefted herself into the air slightly unbalanced from her bulging stomach but managing to gain her balance and began flying in the direction of her old home. Elva gracefully landed on the balcony of Sarah’s apartment and flexed her wings to help ease the tension the long flight had caused.
She peeked through the crack in the curtain to see Sarah standing there obviously just returning from somewhere in the arms of a man.
Feeling this would be the last chance to see Sarah she quickly brought her wings out again and under the cover of darkness flew down to land in a alley way beside the hotel then quick enough to where no one would see her she rushed through the lobby doors up the stairs and to the door of Sarah’s apartment knocking loudly upon the door.
She heard the muttered curses of the two people as clearly as if she was standing next to them then the door opened to reveal the man from the bar months before.
“Sarah there’s some pregnant woman standing at your door,” the man shouted behind him gazing at Elva in clear annoyance. She merely smiled acting as if she had no idea what they were about to do. He slammed the door in her face.
The door quickly opened again to Sarah who merely glanced at Elva saying “I can’t donate anything right now,” the door slammed again.
It opened once again to the wide eyed shock of Sarah.
“Elva!” she exclaimed then her eyes came upon her extremely large stomach. “”Whoa, Elva… she gasped.
“Elva?” muttered the man in obvious thought. “The friend of yours that you haven’t heard from who eloped almost a year ago?”
Sarah nodded and looked up at him. “You don’t mind if we finish this tomorrow do you? I really have to find out what she’s been up to,” she glanced to Elva’s stomach again. “And apparently it’s been pretty much what we’ve been up to.”
The man sighed and turned to grab his jacket from the chair beside the door. “Alright, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Night,” he called walking down the hall. “Nice to meet you Elva.”
“You too,” she called before Sarah pulled her inside.
Sarah’s scent engulfed her as she entered the apartment, the scent of her blood radiating out through her skin. Elva sniffed at it surprisingly. She never realized that human’s smelled so delicious. Briefly she wondered if this was what they smelled like then what they may taste like. Elva quickly fought that thought away and ignored anything Sarah’s scent may do to her.
“Come and sit down. Lord you look bigger than my Aunt Helen when she was pregnant.”
Elva chuckled. “I take that as a compliment,” she collapsed onto the couch where months before she had sat in fear of what Demetris was going to do to her and now she was more than happy that he had came into her life. He was the best thing that had happened to her.
“You know,” began Sarah. “I should be furious with you for how you left. There I wake up with the worst hangover in my life to find a note saying you and that guy had eloped! A guy I might add that I had not knew about or even how long you had known him. I rush to your apartment thinking you may have went there to get your things but what do I find? It completely empty and already ready for someone else. I go to work thinking…hoping that you went there for one last day but you had already turned in your resignation and as far as I knew were half way out of the country by then.”
Elva laughed thinking of Sarah’s shock. It felt good to be with her old friend again.
“Well? What happened?” demanded Sarah.
“Well…” began Elva thinking fast. “Like the note said, Demetris and I are now married,” she held up her hand as proof and before she could continue Sarah had grabbed her hand.
“Wow! This is so beautiful!”
Elva nodded taking back her hand. “Anyway there’s not much to tell, I moved in with him and about four months after our marriage I began getting sick and found out I was pregnant, as you can see.”
“How far along are you? Is it a boy or girl? Have you decided on a name? When…” Elva interrupted the bombardment of questions.
“Whoa, wait a minute here. I’m over eight months so I’m expecting to have it any week now. We decided to wait to find out what it was,” she lied. It was not possible to go the hospital when you have a monster baby growing inside of you. “We haven’t really thought about names. We just want it to be healthy.”
Sarah was grinning from ear to ear. “I can’t believe this!” her smile faded. “But why didn’t you at least call me after all this time?”
Elva was silent for a moment. She knew not what to say to this. “It’s…hard to explain. I shouldn’t even be here now but I hated the way I left without a goodbye.”
“What do you mean you shouldn’t be here?”
“Well…I guess you can say I live a very long ways away and no one knows I came here tonight.”
“Did you have to sneak away?” questioned Sarah her brow furrowing.
“No it’s nothing like that its just…complicated. I can’t explain it but enough about me. What about you? Don’t think I didn’t recognize that man of yours. What was his name George? Before I left you were furious at him for standing you up?”
“Oh yes but he came and apologized for it and I decided to give him another chance,” she shrugged. “We’ve been going out ever since. He’s so wonderful Elva. We’ve even talked about marrying!”
Elva was relieved at how quickly Sarah jumped to another subject.
Elva remained with her friend for another hour and when the clock struck twelve she realized she should begin her journey back to the mansion before Demetris came home and noticed her absence. She hated to see his reaction when he found out about her little adventure.
“I have to go,” she said awkwardly standing from the couch.
“Why? Can’t you stay the night?” asked Sarah.
“No,” Elva said a bit too quickly. “If I don’t return soon then they will begin to worry.”
“They?”
“Ummm…yes Demetris and some of his family. They’re visiting for a while.”
Sarah nodded. “Will you call sometime?”
“I’ll try but don’t expect it. Demetris’s family doesn’t really like phones.”
“That’s weird,” commented Sarah
Elva smiled. “Yeah I know but this might be the last time we speak for a while. Maybe forever.”
“Really?”
Elva nodded already feeling the loss of her friend. Sarah came forward and hugged Elva tight. Elva fought hard not to breathe and hugged Sarah in return.
When they pulled apart there were tears in Sarah’s eyes and Elva had to fight back her own knowing Sarah would be curious about their pinkish tint.
“I’ll miss you,” whispered Sarah as they walked to the door.
“I’ll miss you too,” said Elva in return opening the door and stepping outside.
“You take care of that new…well not so new husband of yours and that baby.”
Elva smiled. “I will. I promise.”
“Goodbye Elva.”
“Goodbye Sarah,” with that final goodbye Elva turned and began making her way down the hall hearing the click of the door as it closed and sighed feeling as though a great burden had been lifted. It was good to see her friend again.
An hour later Elva landed quietly in the surrounding forest of the mansion and gazed up at the full moon that shone brightly in the sky thinking of Demetris. He was going to be more than furious if he was already home when she returned.
She began walking in the direction of the mansion. A few minutes later a sound met her ears. Footsteps in the forest.
“Hello,” she called becoming uneasy as the feeling of being watched crept across her. She turned and began walking again ready to bring out her wings when a pain beyond any other pain erupted throughout her arm. She looked down to see a large needle sticking out of it.
The immediate feeling of sleepiness swept across her and she fell to her knees as three men emerged from the forest around her. These were not good men. She could feel it.
“Finally another one!” exclaimed one, his voice slightly muffled from the drugs that were flowing throughout her body.
She collapsed backwards onto her back as the drug seemed to grow stronger.
“I think this one is pregnant,” said another one of the men leaning over her gazing at her in shocked wonderment.
The other two came to crouch over her. “I’ve never heard of them being able to reproduce! This presents a new problem for us but never mind that now. We need to get her back to the lab before the sun rises and the drug wears off.”
She felt the warmth of their hands beneath her as she was dragged away and she fell into unconsciousness the last thought flowing through her head being, why had she ever left the mansion?
