Escape...14
|
“Pull the lever,” ordered the king.
The knight standing next to the platform pulled the lever as ordered and the trapdoor dropped from under her.
At the moment she felt the trapdoor dropped she mustered up what bit of her power she had gained back to teleport herself leaving large bursts of smoke in the air. Effects for the people.
She put herself in the platform where the king sat. He shot up at the sight of the smoke and her disappearance. The guards who had been watching him immediately jumped from the platform and began searching through the crowd.
The king was not turning and no one was looking in his direction to point her out and she decided to remain hidden to see where this was going. Her eyes caught sight of Gavin who was shouting something trying to be overheard, through the screaming and shouting of the panicking crowd.
It was at that moment that her eyes widened in shock as some of the people she had believed to be peasants discarded their cloaks to reveal not normal clothing but instead the clothing of the elves. She looked through out the crowd to see it filled with elves who making their way to fight the knights.
She felt tears well up in her eyes. Her friends had not abandoned her. They were here to help her.
She smiled to herself a sudden idea coming to her that would end this quickly and sufficiently. Using her regained power she stole the dagger of one of the knight’s and caught it in her hand before sneaking up behind the king. She brought her face to be right next to his.
“Boo,” she whispered in his ear before quickly whipping the dagger forward to press the blade against his throat.
“In the time it takes you to try to disarm me I can already have your throat cut so I suggest you do not move or make a sound unless I tell you to.”
He remained still.
She smiled silently. “Good now order your men down.”
He did not speak. She hit him hard in his back with her free hand. “Now,” she ordered fiercely.
“Men cease your fight!” he shouted. Only few stopped. He shouted it again and louder. All of the knights stopped and turned to look at their king who was now at the mercy of a woman.
The elves took this opportunity to catch the knights in a similar position such as the one Yolanda had with the king. Some even took the chance by knocking some of the guards unconscious. All in the crowd remained still curious as to what she would do next.
“I should kill you,” she whispered in the king’s ear. She felt him stiffen.
“But I’m not you,” she continued. “I don’t kill for the pleasure. I never wanted anything to do with your kingdom but yet you felt threatened by the power I had and even though I never did anything to you, you hunted me down. You wanted me dead, but it seems that won’t be happening. I want you to know that after today you and your men and any of the people that belong to your kingdom will never enter the forest again!”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that the spell that I will be performing in the next few minutes will only allow the ones I allow entrance into the forest and the magical realm.”
He remained silent.
She gazed out over the crowd and her gaze landed on Gavin. He was standing just as still as the others gazing up at her.
She returned her focus to the king. “I’m going to let you go now and disappear into the magical realm. You’ll never see or hear from me again but if you try to find me again then I’ll finish this. I also advise you to not send anyone after us because all it would take would be a flick of my hand and I can send this dagger straight through your pathetic cold heart. Do we understand each other?”
“Y-Yes,” he replied with a quiver in his voice.
She smiled removing the dagger. “Good. Goodbye king!” she said happily before jumping from the platform and into the crowd. Following her lead the elves in the crowd turned and began to make their way to the forest.
The knights who were still conscious looked to their king for direction or command. To her relief he remained silent.
She sighed as the crowd as if on cue spread apart to allow her through. They were frightened of her. It was to be expected considering what she had just done.
She had not wanted them to fear her but she no longer cared. She would be free and she knew it as she walked already going through the spell in her head and beginning to weave the web of magic around the forest and realm. She remained behind the elves as they slowly made their way back into the forest.
When they finally reached the edge, she stopped and allowed the elves to continue on. She sighed and began forming the web of the spell in her mind. She was not going to allow any enemy entrance in the forest again.
Layna emerged from the forest and came to Yolanda.
“How are you?” she questioned.
“I’m fine. You don’t know how happy it makes me to know that you all came to help me.”
Layna looked at the ground guiltily. “The truth is…we didn’t know you had been captured. We thought you had decided to run away with Gavin.”
The mention of his name angered Yolanda and she turned back to gaze into the forest. “Do not mention his name around me.,” she was silent for a moment. “If you did not know then how did you end up there today?”
“The name you do not want me to mention,” replied Layna simply. “He arrived last night and told us everything. Even the part about him originally out to capture you but it all changing when he fell in love with you. He said he couldn’t sit by and watch the woman he loved is killed.”
Yolanda turned to her quickly, her eyes showing her confusion. “Why? He could have stopped me from being captured but he didn’t. He was the reason I was up there! Why would he not watch me die?”
Layna glanced behind her and that was when the voice drifted to meet her ears. “It’s like she said. He loves you.”
She turned to see Gavin standing there looking as nervous as though he was about to face the greatest swordsman ever in a dual. Briefly she felt Layna’s presence disappear.
He slowly took the few steps forward to bring himself a mere foot away from her.
“What do you want?” she asked coldly not looking at his face but instead toward his chest.
“I know you hate me right now and I don’t blame you,” he began.
Her mind was reeling. She didn’t hate and as much as she wanted to she knew she would never be able to hate him as much as she tried to. She would always love him but…there was something holding her back.
“When I first began this I thought you were a murderer and someone who didn’t care for anything but when I first met you it all changed. You were the most stubborn and beautiful woman I had ever seen.” He came forward and tilted her chin up to force her gaze to meet his. Her heart stopped at the feel of his skin against hers. “You were not the woman I was expecting. You were kind and caring and all you wanted was to be free of running. Be able to live your life without looking around every corner expecting someone to jump out at any minute. I tried to fight it but I lost and you know what? I’m happy I did. I love you and I don’t regret it,” he paused looking deeply into her eyes. “If you want me to go away and leave you alone forever then just say the word and I’ll leave. You’ll never have to see me again but that’s for you to decide.”
She gazed up at the man she loved with longing in her eyes. He was giving her a choice? As much as she disliked him for getting her captured she knew she loved him and always would. Could she live with herself if she allowed him to walk away from her forever?
She brought her hand up to place it on his cheek and smiled. “I’ve waited my whole life for someone like you. What right do I have to make you leave me forever?”
He gave a loud whoop of happiness before picking her up by her waist and spinning around. She clutched her arms tightly around his neck laughing delightedly. When he stopped spinning he pressed his lips against hers in a passionate kiss that stole her breath away.
When he broke it he leaned his forehead against hers smiling giddily like a child with a new toy. “Together,” he whispered.
“Forever,” she whispered in return giggling before their lips met again in a kiss showing all their love to one another.
