(CLARY’S P.O.V)

“The house is going to fall in at any given chance Clary.  It is dangerous and it is going to have to be demolished.  The people are coming next week and I don’t want you to step into it ever again.  That is final.”

The argument with her dad that morning kept replaying itself in her head, tormenting her.  The fact that her father made that decision without her consent made her blood boil.

Even though he was the parent and the one who made the decisions and did not need his child’s permission to do something.  It still hurt because he knew how much she loved the old house and how much it meant to her.  It had always been her haven; a place to go to when she needed to relax or just to be away from home. A home away from home to be exact. More importantly, it was the last thing she had left of Alden.  If he tore it down then she would have nothing left to remember the special times she had with him.  What was a girl to do?

She took a sip from the glass of the iced tea she held her hand thinking.

The sun burned on the horizon, scorched the earth like Clary’s tears against her skin.  She fought them back and lifted the corded phone with fumbling fingers, and dialed Alden’s phone number.  When the fourth muffled ring sounded in her ear she lowered the phone to put it back on the receiver dismay flooding her heart.

     “Hello,” pause.  “Hello?”

Clary’s hand started back up to her ear phone still clenched in her fist.

     “Yes, yes I’m here.”

“Ummmm…” came the disoriented timbre of Alden’s father’s voice.  He said nothing else obviously confused.

“May I please speak with Alden?” she asked.

“Uhh…he’s gone right now may I take a message?” he questioned.

Alden had gone out?  That was something new to her.  In all the time she had known him he had never actually went out except to buy much need groceries and some such.  She was happy at the thought he had gone out just because he could.

“May I ask where he is?” she asked politely.

“He said something about going on a date,” his father replied.

Clary’s heart stopped.  A date?  He had went out with another girl?  She could hear the blood rushing to her head.  She knew she had no right to be jealous or mad because Alden had never really been hers in the first place.  Her thoughts flew back to the kisses they shared and she heard the loud crashing of her heart shattering.  She glanced down and realized it was not her heart that had made the noise but the glass of tea that had slipped from her fingers and shattered across the hardwood.  Her worst fears had become true.  He had just considered her his friend.  The kisses they had shared had meant nothing to him.  Nothing at all.

The phone slid from her grasp and dangled on the end of the cord swinging slightly.  Somewhere in the depths her mind Clary realized she was trying to defy reality denying what was real and attempting to cover it up with an illusion to ease the pain that had burrowed within her.

Clary loved Alden and even though she hadn’t told him she felt angry with him for not realizing.  The obviousness of her feelings for him was absurd and unless he was so oblivious to have not noticed he had rejected her unspoken love.  Whether knowing it or not, he had crushed her.

Clary stood and ran out the door only to crash into her father who had just gotten home.

“Clary, what the…what’s the matter?” he questioned noticing the tears that had broken free of their barrier and were now coursing down her cheeks in silent ripples.

She did not reply and instead pushed past him and began to run with all that was in her.  Across the field and to the only haven she had ever had.      (ALDEN’S P.O.V)

The buzz of the busy signal of the phone sounded so foreboding in his ear.  He hung up only to immediately turn it back on and dial the Hamilton number once again.  Again the annoying buzz met his ear.

He slammed the phone down in frustration.  He had been trying for the past twenty minutes since his dad had told him about Clary’s call to get a hold of her but still the busy signal continued.

He couldn’t even begin to imagine what Clary was thinking right now.  If he ever did get a hold of her she would probably ask about the girl and ask how they met and say things like she was happy for them.  He grimaced in disgust.

Little did Clary realize that he couldn’t even make it through a single date without thinking of her! How could she be so completely oblivious to the love he held for her?!

   (CALRY’S P.O.V)

She ran until she was near crumpling with exhaustion.  She ran and ran until she finally collapsed into the grassy yard of the old house.  The moon shining brightly across the rotted wood and faded colorings.

With what little diminished strength that remained in her, with the minuscule amount of emotional determination that continued to dwell in her sorrowed soul she hoisted herself into the tree that served as the makeshift ladder to the rooftop.

The rusted tin groaned perilously under her feet.  Her knees buckled and the cool metal pressed against her cheek and sadness devoured all that she once known as happy.

She sat up to her hands and knees and crawled her way father up on the roof and laid on her back so she could gaze up at the stars as she and Alden once had done together.

With one final warning moan Clary felt her world give way beneath her, and plummeting to the hard ground of reality, the weight of her shattered dreams crumbled down on the insignificant size of her body, crushing her.  Pain beyond pain flooded every fiber of her being, saturating every hidden crevice, clawing…biting…burning…she withdrew into the unfathomable void of unconsciousness where the pain disappeared into non-existent.       (ALDEN’S P.O.V)

Alden picked up the phone and with practiced fingers dialed Clary’s telephone number for what seemed the five hundredth time that night, nearly an hour dragged on and every time he dialed he was greeted with the screeching glare of the busy signal…something was wrong.

Reluctantly Alden retired to bed but he would not be so easily defeated for the very instant he woke up he tried to call Clary again.  Melodic ringing met his ears that lost its charm what had to be the twentieth repetition.

He called several time that day in hopes someone my answer but no one ever did.

The next day he called again.

     And the next.

But his persistence was to no avail.

That is until multiple days afterward.  Just as Alden was about to hang up.

“Hello,” came the rough and exhausted sounding voice of Clary’s father.

“Mr. Hamilton?” questioned Alden slightly shocked at having someone finally answer his call.

     “Yes?”

“Is Clary there?” he asked feeling happy that he might finally get the chance to talk to her.

“It this you Alden?” questioned Dane.

     “Yes."

Her father sighed, sadness creeping into his voice.  “Alden three days ago Clary went out to the old house on the ranch.  You remember it don’t you?”

“Yes,” replied Alden sudden apprehension filling his body.

“Well it’s getting old and I had decided to tear it down.  I warned Clary about it’s instability but three night’s ago I came home only to meet Clary who ran out of the house.  I tried stop her, Lord knows I did but she pushed passed me and ran toward the house.  I thought something was wrong and she needed time alone so I let her be but when an hour passed and she still did not come back I went to the old house to hunt for her.”  He sighed again.  Alden could hear the tears in his voice.  “The house collapsed with her on the roof and all the debris came down on top of her. Alden, Clary’s in a coma.”
