There once was a little child by the name of Dawn.
She crept silently, beneath the swaying trees of every October's breathing calm.
She knew what it was to cherish someone. Someone sown deep within her heart.
She also knew what it was like to lose a certain love. Every stitch ripped apart.
The little girl had detached herself from the pain, but the scars left behind, still remained.
Five years had passed, since the little girls mother had died. She was now 8 years old, but she had loved.
Her affection for her beloved mother bounded her to a sickness, undefined. Nature seemed to heal her for short periods of time.
She would take walks into the forest and sing with the animals as they cried along side her.
Little did she know, that something, somewhere, unheard, unseen, so intangible, was listening, waiting...watching.
Waiting for the day she would stare into a certain child's eyes once more...hold her one last time, but could she hold her? Could she really?.....Would she even feel it?
On a windy Sunday morning, Dawn had felt sicker than before. She went out into the forest, deep, in through the broken trails and clawing trees.
She ran and ran until she collapsed from exhaustion. She began to dream.
"Dawn! how was your day today? Did you have fun playing outside? Are you hurt? Let mommy help you."
The darkness had settled in and Dawn awoke. She could not find her way back home. "Help! Somebody help me please!" But no voice was heard or an echo found, simply the resonation of her cries on the half frozen ground.
She cried helplessly throughout the night until she came upon a tree. Surprisingly, the tree was lit on fire. She cuddled beneath it's dry fallen leaves and slept soundly and dreamt.
"Dawn, can you hear me? It's mommy."
"Mommy?!" Dawn cried out in tears of joy.
"Yes it's me" replied her mother. "I can't stay long, you have to wake up now."
"No mommy!" screamed Dawn. "Mommy!"
With a crack, the smallest branch fell next to Dawns head and woke her up. The fire had spread and almost burned her little legs.
As she awakened she heard a strange whisper. "The only way out is the sickness you carry...your love for a special person."
Dawn was very confused. It was light out now and she could see the way back this time. She started walking home.
Everything from the night before started to fade away. Memories, thoughts, love. It seemed as if being outside brought her closer to her mother. Her house was simply a shell blocking everything out.
The next day, she went back to the tree to thank it for keeping her warm.
The tree was half burnt and dying. She felt dizzy once again and fell into a dream.
"Hi Dawn. How are you feeling? Are you being a good little girl? I love you......."
Dawn woke up right away, the voice was so clear and clean. The tree was holding her. She screamed and ran into the forest. "Mommy!!! Help me please!" She cried.
She tripped over the roots of a tree, she tried to get herself up off the ground but....The roots were moving, coiling around her legs, dragging her back to the tree.
"No!" she screamed, "I won't go back, I won't!"
The trees continued to drag her as she weeped for her mother to come to her.
She approached the tree and thought that this was the end, she would die, and join her mother.
"Maybe now, I'll be happy"....She thought...
The tree opened its rough dying branches, and brought her to its dry trunk.
She screamed some more in futile air. Nothing. All the sudden the tree spoke. "Hi Dawn...It's mommy...Come back to me now...Come back...won't you die for me..you'll get to see me again?"
Dawn started to cry and said "O.k mommy, o.k...I will"
The tree embraced Dawn within its death adorned arms, and she fell asleep once more.
This time, she awoke into what seemed to be a dream. Her mother was there. Dawn asked, "Is this another dream?" "No" replied her mother. "This, is reality, welcome back honey..."
...Death, if you truly love someone, you would be willing to die for that person. Nothing can contain, or end love. It is boundless and unbreakable. It has no second hand strokes, no limit. It is as pure as the first snow after a seasons death, after an October wraith....

scary but catching. I wanted to keep reading. only thing was the way you switched between past and present tense. That threw me off and broke me out of the "zone". Good good start. |
