The Values of Love

Romance Created on 6-9-08 Views(43) Story Rating G

The crystal clear water wrapped itself like a cocoon around her body. Her dark hair was almost unseen in the darkness, floating atop the water. There was no sound, no movement… nothing, just her and the stars that loomed quietly above her. The darkness engulfed every part of her body making her shiver, not in fear but in excitement. A new country, a new world to explore and discover. Her Spanish back ground could never give her the overwhelming joy of actually spending a whole summer in her native land. Mel closed her eyes and sighed. Her father had told her stories to put her to sleep at night; she sat and listened with anticipation at the wonders that were being laid before her. Castles and statues, princesses and white dancing horses were the fuel that gave her imagination the boost that it needed to study her heritage for the next four years. The sky above her was not the same back home, to her it seemed as if it was calling for her, that it just wanted to engulf her with its beauty and take her away from all the horror in the world. But she knew better than to dream big. Her mother and left her when she was five, it was the time in a little girl’s life where she needs her mum most to help guide and encourage her. She was left sanding on the footpath crying, no one cared about a little dark skinned Spanish girl, no one wanted to take care of a spoilt little brat. This was they way she thought until she met Sarah. She was only 9 when they met but instantly they became friends. Nothing could tear them apart. As they grew older Mel learned that not everything she had come to believe about herself was true, she wasn’t spoilt and there were people that cared for her no matter how much she missed her mum. Sarah showed her the true wonder’s of the world and how friendship is one of the most important things in their lives. They were 16 when Krista moved to town. She was the beautiful new blonde girl that every girl wanted to be and every guy just wanted, but she was an outcast, a rebel. Constantly in trouble, constantly running away, nothing seemed to satisfy her need to travel; to be free. Once again it was Sarah to the rescue; she took in Krista and showed her that life wasn’t as bad as she was making it out to be. Krista resisted Sarah’s attempt to make friends at first but after a while she found that she would rather be accepted by the two people that wouldn’t judge her, than the group that only cared for her Daddy’s money.Mel giggled to herself; the darkness around her seemed to lighten slightly as she remembered the struggles and the tests that their friendship was put up to. She sighed again, but as she let out her breath she sunk slowly under the skin of the water. Bubbles floated quickly to the top and burst when the hit the crisp fresh air. There was a splash as a body protruded into her little bubble of silence. Hands clamped around her shoulders and she felt herself being pulled to the surface. She took in a gash of air and wiped the water from her eyes “What the hell do you think you are doing?” She screamed furiously, thrashing her arms about.

“Tener cuidado! (Watch out)” A young males voice boomed over the sound of splashing water.

“Qué le hace piensa su hacer?” She repeated herself in Spanish.

A heavy accent answered her in English “Saving your life, now if you don’t mind could you please stop splashing, your getting water in my eyes” Mel let her arms float on top of the water and she was faced by dark brown eyes and a slim tanned body. She blushed slightly when she realized she was staring. Mel backed away from the boy; it was the young bell boy that had taken their bags at the door “You were doing what?” He looked at her puzzled then answered in a soft tone “Were you not drowning before?”

Mel laughed slightly and shook her head “No I wasn’t”

“Oh, well I thought it might be…” He paused looking for the right word “Cool, to save you” He laughed at the look she gave him “I am terribly sorry” He told her while begging for her forgiveness.

“How about we go and get a drink for the bar, your shout. Then I will forgive you” She said, trying to be as polite as possible. He smiled and put out his hand for her to take “That sounds like a deal.”
