Friesian
|
Friesians are large, black, strong, the modern day unicorn. These majestic animals were almost wiped out but are making a strong comeback.
The Friesian is an old breed dating back from the Middle Ages its origin is Friesland in the northern Netherlands. The Friesian breed is one of the oldest domesticated breeds in Europe.
The Friesian suffered a decline in numbers with the increase of mechanization on the farm and in transportation. The number of stallions was reduced to only three prior to WW1 and now there are about 1200.
The Friesian is used for light agricultural work, carriage horses, pleasure riding, and is found also in the circuses.
The Friesian has a very long and wavy mare and tail that are never cut and often reach the ground. The breed also has feather and long leg hair reaching from the middle leg. The colour is only black and only a small white star is permissible. The head and legs are carried high when it walks. This breed has been called the modern unicorn.
This beautiful breed has made it through two world wars, mechanization, and crossbreeding I’m sure it will be here for many more years and will the people or the future will be able to see the closest thing to a unicorn the word has to offer.
