Ebony
|
Ebony’s feet were scratched and bleeding but still she ran on, her deep grey eyes darted about catching every move the others made.
Her little sister Aliara was falling behind, Ebony dodged each tree with ease but Aliara struggled. Ebony swung around a tree to quickly change direction while keeping her momentum, she swooped Aliara and signaled for her to hold on as again she swung around a tree.
The twigs on the forest floor felt as if they were puncturing deep into her skin.
The forest was thick and she could hardly the other villagers anymore. “Hurry Ebony! the waters are closing in!” Aliara squealed.
No ‘the waters’ were not a flood, they were a tribe of people who could control water like Ebony could control wind and fire. The only difference is that there were hundreds of waters and only one Ebony.
“Use the fire!” again she squealed, Ebony shook her head and pointed to a tree as they passed by it. “Oh, that’s right fire burns wood doesn’t it? How about wind then?... oh wait, that would just knock the entire forest down, it’s to strong.” Aliara said slightly annoyed, Ebony gave a single nod and continued to run.
She finally began to catch up to the others that had fled her village when the waters attacked.
Ebony’s dark black hair was in a loose ponytail but Aliara’s was left down to flail about in the wind.
“I think we’ve lost them!” a familiar voice said, It was Luke a member of their village. He was a fighter, his skills with the spear were amazing but he and Ebony alone could not face the waters and the other fighters of the village were no match for the waters either.
Ebony had always had a motherly roll over Luke and Aliara, in fact Ebony was like a mother to all in the village, there were a few that were older then she was but they just wanted to have fun as most children do.
The few adults that used to live in the village were gone now. This was not the first time that the waters had attacked. It had been about 3 years since last time, but everyone remembered the terror they brought and everyone lost their parents, the waters had targeted all the adults in hope of destroying the city.
They had all stopped, everyone was tired from running and most of them were injured.
“Aliara! You’re needed over here!” Luke called, Aliara carefully weaved around all the villagers, even though she was only 9 she understood all the pain and suffering that had plagued their village and she almost burst into tears at the sight of so many of her fellow villagers wounded.
As she neared Luke she saw Adesina lying on the ground unconscious. Adesina and Aliara were they only ones in the entire village who knew what herbs and medicines would speed the healing process up.
Though only ran by children the village was extremely well organized, there was only about 300 people and not one of them was above 16. Luke was in charge of their 50 fighters who were both male and female, Ebony was in charge of their 50 spell casters, and Aliara was in charge of making sure everyone else also had a job to do to. The younger children that were to help everyone as much as they could.
“Adesina!” Aliara shouted as she ran towards her. After looking at her friends injuries and checking her pulse a tear slid down Aliara’s soft cheek, “She is dead.” she muttered, Ebony knelt down to Aliara’s height and hugged her trying to comfort her. “Ebony, when will mum and dad come back?” Aliara quietly asked, Ebony stared at the ground then shook her head slowly, Luke who was standing behind Aliara began to speak “They won’t... be coming back Aliara... their dead” he murmured.
“How did Adesina get so injured?” Aliara questioned, “When the waters attacked she tried to fight them but alas she was no warrior, they attacked her without mercy. I ran in to the battle and pulled her out hoping I could save her, when we fled I carried her on my back but when I slipped she fell off and I think the fall may have broken a couple of her ribs.” Luke replied, Aliara glared at him with unforgiving eyes, she broke away from Ebony and ran towards Luke, about halfway she stopped with tears streaming down her face and started shouting “How could you let her go into battle?! Why didn’t you save her before she got injured?! She’s dead now and it’s all your fault! She was only 11 and now she will NEVER be coming back!
Everyone around was watching one of their leaders brake down into tears and watching the other two helpless to do anything about it. Not only all this but the waters would soon be upon them and they had to keep moving.
Aliara collapsed onto the forest floor in tears, the only person she had left now was Ebony and at 9 years old she found it hard to deal with. Ebony walked slowly over to her sister and picked her up. She made a signal to Luke with her hands, “Everyone! Move out!” called Luke with a deep voice.
Luke was the eldest in the village but even he was only 16. He did not want to leave Adesina’s corpse lying on the ground for the waters to trample on so he put her on his back and began to run, with-in 2 minutes everyone was on the move again.
Before long all the villagers could see the waters chasing them. Though the waters were just ordinary people they looked so evil, with eyes that showed no emotion.
Please tell me what you think.
