The Screams of the Night (PART 18)

The nurses were kind enough to bring chairs for Jake and Diana. Stephanie preferred sitting on the bed, at Johnny’s feet. In less than an hour the sun had risen again, and the four friends had fallen asleep. The hospital filled with the normal sounds of sick people: coughs, sneezes and people asking for help. Still, the four of them slept through the morning. Around noon, a nurse from the day shift woke them up. She carried a tray of typical hospital food for Johnny.
-“There’s a cafeteria in the fifth floor…” – She said uncaringly to Diana, Stephanie and Jake.
-“Thanks.” – Said Jake. When the nurse left he told Johnny in a very sarcastic tone: - “Listen, dude. I forgot to bring money last night. You know with all of the stuff that was going on. I mean, I remembered to turn off the TV, I just forgot about the money! So, we’re gonna go home. See if the refrigerator’s still there.”
Everybody laughed and said their ‘See ya later’s to Johnny. Jake decided to drive back his neighbor’s car, while Diana drove Jake’s. Needless to say, the house was a complete mess. Almost everything was broken, and what wasn’t broken was pulverized according to Stephanie. Jake didn’t even tried to fix the mess. He just took some money his mother had saved in a jar in the kitchen and got on the car again. The girls followed, with Stephanie making jokes about how everything was broken. Jake drove to the nearest Wendy’s and ordered three cheeseburgers to go. The three of them ate on their way to the hospital.
When they arrived to the hospital, a short woman with messy curly hair stood next to Johnny.
-“When your father left I wished he would take you with him. I knew I wouldn’t be all right after that! What kind of mother wishes to get rid of her own child! But you look so much like him… So, I started to get myself busy. Working a lot, trying to be with you the less time possible… And, now you’ve gone werewolf hunting and gotten hurt in the process! Johnny I can’t pay this hospital bill… as a matter of fact I don’t want to! I’m sorry… I just can’t do this anymore…”
Johnny’s mom left him alone and passed hurriedly next to the trio without noticing them. Johnny sat on his bed looking to the ceiling with tears sliding across his cheeks. He cleaned his tears and noticed his friends in front of them.
-“Lovely, my mother. Isn’t she?”
-“Sorry, man.” – Said Jake.
-“Don’t worry about it. I always knew she would kick me out before I was 18.” – Said Johnny. –“Besides, I already know where I’m gonna crash from now on… Your house!”
-“Yeah, well. We might have a problem with that. We have no house.” – Said Stephanie.
-“The werewolves destroyed everything…” – Added Jake.
Everybody fell into an uncomfortable silence.
-“I better call, mom. See if Aunt Helen will have us there…” – Said Diana picking up her cell phone.
Diana dialed and when her mother answered the phone, she left back to the emergency room. Almost as soon as Diana had left, Mrs. Johnson entered the room crying and screaming.
-“I’m gonna kill the three of you!” – She yelled. –“Why didn’t you call me? I had to find out about it in the news!”
-“News?” – Asked Jake.
-“Yes! There’s a whole camera crew at our house showing the devastation caused by those things at our house…”
-“Mama, we just didn’t want to bother you. And we’re all right!” – Said Stephanie.
-“All right?!?! If you were all right, Johnny wouldn’t be here!” – She yelled. Then to Johnny she asked: –“When are the doctors releasing you, honey?”
-“As soon as I pay the bill…” – Answered Johnny.
-“Okay, so I’ll go take care of that and I’ll take you home. No need of you spending your summer vacations in a crappy motel with us.” – Said Mrs. Johnson grabbing Stephanie by the hand and leaving.
Diana entered back into the room.
-“Jake I think I just saw your mom…” – Said Diana.
-“Yeah. She’s going to pay Johnny’s bill and taking us to stay at a ‘crappy motel’, I think it was what she said.” – Answered Jake.
-“Exactly that’s what she said.” – Added Johnny.
-“Oh, well. Mom went ballistic. She’s coming to pick me up to take me to Aunt Helen’s and she said you could come too. But now that your mom’s back, I don’t see why you would go there.”- Said Diana.
-“Yeah, well… Depends on the crappy motel she takes us…” – Said Jake smiling.
Mrs. Johnson came a few minutes later. When she entered, the first thing she did was hug Diana and tell her how sorry she was for the lost of Diana’s father. Diana said thanks and left to the entrance to wait for her mother.
-“Johnny, Stephanie told me what just happened with your mother. I’d love to take you with us, but first I have to talk to her. Is that okay with you?”
-“Sure. Why wouldn’t it?” – said Johnny standing from his bed. –“So, am I free to go?”
-“Yes, darling. I came on taxi, but I presume you boys have the car here. Right?” – Asked Mrs. Jonhson.
Everyone was quite silent on the way to Johnny’s house, especially Johnny. Mrs. Johnson drove with the radio turned on, and for a few minutes it seemed as if life was back to normal. Mrs. Johnson parked the car and asked:
-“Why don’t you three go up to Johnny’s room and watch a little TV, while I have a tiny talk with Martha?”
Everyone nodded and when they entered the house they went directly to Johnny’s room. Johnny entered his room without another word and turned the TV as loudly as he could. Stephanie and Jake sat on Johnny’s bed, but Johnny simple grabbed a backpack from his closet and started putting some clothes on it.
-“Dude, what are you doing?” – Asked Jake.
-“Packing. No matter what mom says after Mrs. J talks I’m not staying where I’m not wanted.”
-“Common, Johnny. Don’t make rash decisions.” – Said Jake, but Johnny pretended not to hear him.
-“Goodness, sake! If you’re gonna pack at least do it right!” – Said Stephanie taking the backpack and throwing its contents on top of the bed. –“Fold everything so you have more space!”
While Johnny took from the closet his favorite pieces of clothing, Stephanie folded everything and put it in the backpack. The voices of the two women downstairs rose to the point where the conversation had turned into a fight. Jake turned up the volume of the TV and stared helping Johnny with the packing.
A few minutes later, a red-faced Mrs. Johnson entered the room.
-“Pack some things, Johnny! You’re leaving with me…”
-“Already done, Mrs. J.” – Said Johnny throwing his backpack over his shoulder.
-“Good! Common, let’s go.” – She said still red faced.
Johnny, Jake and Stephanie followed Mrs. Johnson downstairs. Johnny’s mother stood at the end of the stairs, but when she saw Johnny coming downstairs she turned around.
-“Bye, mom.” – Said Johnny to his mother’s back. She didn’t even answer.
An hour before nightfall, Mrs. Johnson had found a motel decent enough and had rented two rooms: one for the boys and one for the girls. At their room, Johnny had a strange request for Jake.
-“You want me to what?” –asked Jake surprised.
-“Tie me up tonight. Listen, I got the chains and everything. I took them from the garage right before we left mom’s house…”
-“Why would you want me to tie you up?”
-“Dude, that thing scratched me last night! What if it’s a real werewolf thingy and I turn into one…” – Jake scoffed. –“Dude, just entertain me for tonight. Okay?”
Jake laughed. Johnny’s face remained serious.
-“Okay, I’ll do it. But if nothing happens by midnight, I’m untying you!” – Said Jake still laughing.
-“Fine.” – Said Johnny giving Jake the chains.
Jake tied Johnny to a column still laughing at the ridiculous idea.
-“Want me to bring you a pillow?”
-“Just turn on the TV, dummy.”
Jake turned the TV and waited for something interesting to come up. A few minutes later, the sun finished setting and a suspense movie started. Jake fell asleep pretty quickly, but was awaken abruptly. Jake looked at Johnny and saw his friend in pain. Johnny had twisted his face and was groaning. The chains were tightening Johnny’s body leaving red marks all over his chest, abs, arms and legs. Brown hair started growing everywhere in Johnny’s body as he grew taller. Johnny’s nose grew and became a round snout and his ears became pointy. Saliva started to drip from Johnny’s mouth, and his eyes turned yellowish. And then, Johnny let out his first howl…
