The centaurs in the dark forest

Creative Created on 4-23-07 Views(71) Story Rating G

She washed the dishes as she thought too much. She really wished she didn't think so much but the more she tried the more she did. The transparent blue glass bowl broke in her hand but only cut her a little. She stared at the blood that made a path down her palm before dripping into the soapy water below. It burned but she savored it. It was a moments distraction from her overpowering thoughts.
That night when she went to sleep, she dreamt that she walked back to the forest. She still had her bedclothes on: a long white t-shirt gown with three buttons at the top and her feet bare. She was in a sort of trance, just as she was as she washed the dishes, only her mind vacant instead of overbearing.
When she reached the trees she hoped that green eyed man would come and meet her at the crossover. But he was not there. She could smell his scent, he was not far, but he was not within sight. A twig snapped. She didn't flinch. The patting of hooves on earthen floor made its way to her ears. It was the only sound in the night. She could see the centaur that spoke with her once before at the water. His tail swung a steady rythm, mixing with his mates as they walked softly side by side. She thought it was very sweet. Precious. She wished them the best and happiness in all their days within her mind. She did not make a sound to announce her presence, she did not want to break their cherishable moment. She stood quietly until they were out of sight.
She was about to walk further after they were gone, but when she took a step she bumped in to another centaur that stood before watching her. She didn't see him because she had been looking the other direction at the passing centaur couple. His eyes were unfriendly but had an inviting look in them. She did not know what to think. She wished the green eyed man was near. Where was he? The centaur extended his arm to her--she looked around one more time for the green eyed man. Her heart faltered. She had hoped he would have come to her, as she had come to him. His presence gave her calm and she needed it so very much. When he spoke she swore it must be of angelic domain because she felt like she was in Heaven when sound flowed from his lips. He must not be coming. He looked up. The hand was still there waiting for an answer. She reached up and his strong hand gripped where her arms bends and she gripped his arm as well as he pulled her up onto his back and trotted off into the dark of the night deeper into the forest.
The centaur's back was strong and she could feel his muscles shift as we walked along. She doesn't know why she accepted the offer. She rode in silence. He walked in silence. The air once warm became colder the deeper they went into the dark forest. When it became so dark that she could not see, her eyes were unable to focus any longer, he stopped his walk and knelt down, causing her body to slide off his back. She felt his tail brush her face as he was turning around. He looked at her for a few moments in silence. She did not understand his thoughts. He confused her. He straightend up his shoulders and then turned and galloped off. It was too dark for her. She did not see him gallop off, but she heard the hooves beating off the ground. She did not know what to do really. It was so dark. She was lost. This deep into the forest you would not know if it was day or night. She sat on the ground, pulled her legs to her chest, rested her head on her knees and shivered from the cold air. She knew not to trust a centaur. She learned from experience, but here she was again. What did it matter. Alone and cold here, or alone and cold there. So she had given hope that he would take her somewhere better than where she was...it did not mean he was obligated to just because she wanted it or had hoped for it. She was a stupid girl. She was not meant to be. This is why everything keeps happening the way it does. The awful thing is that she is stuck there in the darkness. She cannot even await death for her body does not need food or water and a simple chill in the air is not enough to take her. She sits still on that earthen floor. Her legs still pulled to her chest. Her arms around them. Her head down on her knees. She cannot even cry anymore.
