They walk into the deep into the forest still, she is blindfolded and lead by the stranger with the calm voice and gentle but firm grasp to her hand. Once in awhile his thumb traces a circle on her hand as it is held in a tranquilizing manner. You hear the ground make soft patting sounds as their feet walk upon it and it is so quiet that you can hear their breathing if you listen when he is not describing the surroundings to her. She begins to wonder what lay ahead in these quiet moments, but then he reassures her that it is so wonderful. She stumbles a little on a raised tree root, causing their hands to separate as she catches herself on the ground. She feels it begin to rain slightly and her knees and palms are wet from the soil. She takes this opportunity to lift the blindfold from her eyes and sees that there are no flowers, no beautiful creatures about, no green leaves on these twisted empty trees.  The ground is covered in spiders and slugs and insects she's never seen before but looked unkind. From a tree ahead she sees bright colored cloth of somebody's clothing. The man who lead her is not in sight. Where did he go? Another girl peers from around the tree and sees this fallen girl and asks her if she is okay. She gives her a hand and helps her up and they work together to brush off the dirt. They look around and realize they both have the same kind of blindfold in their hand. The girl in the bright colored cloth explains that a man with a gentle voice had lead her here into the forest and she was waiting for his return. She heard the commotion of the fall and took off the blindfold. The girl covered in dirt just sank back down to the wet earth and closed her eyes. She felt so tired now.The girl in the bright colored cloth left and but returned with two apples. She had found an apple tree. She shared with the other girl and they talked a long time. They wondered and talked of the best way to get out of this gloomy forest and back home. They wondered why the man would do this, lead them to the dark forest. Was he playing a game? Was he lonely and thought "the more the merrier"? Was he was making a collection? Who knew what his intentions were... As they sat, they caught a glimpse of him through the trees. They quietly walked up to him before he could know what happened. He was in shock they had found one another. Bewildered. He intended to keep them separated. He wondered if they had found the others but realized they had not or they would be there too, surrounding him and asking questions. He smiled his smile knowing it would melt their hearts and played stupid. He refused to answer questions, he would act like they did not even ask them--and still keep his smile as if there was a festival going on. The girls got so frustrated, as was intended, that they retreated and found a place to sit and think. He went to the girl in the bright colored cloth and told her the way to the meadow. He knew she was had a strong mind and would keep questioning him until he answered and he did not want to be bothered with it. She said she must tell the other girl, but he promised to do it and she went forth. He went to the other girl sitting filthy-still from the fall.  He knew she'd give up asking the questions. She looked weaker. He held up the blindfold and told her the journey was not finished. He said "trust me" and with her mind spinning he wrapped it around her eyes and tied it snuggly behind her. He reached down and grabbed her hand and pulled her up. She was in a trance. His hand was as cold as the dead she realized now. Why hadn't she realized it before? He still spoke softly, this time he apologized for not telling the truth in the first place. He said he would never lie like that again, not to worry. "Trust me." She walked in step with him. He began telling her of the flower to her left, it had many soft violet petals and next to it was a canary colored flower, it's petals drifting up and down in the gentle breeze. Sadly she could smell the flowers that she knew did not exist. A tear ran down her cheek making a clean path in the dirt that remained from when she touched her face with her filthy hands. She tasted the tear as it slid over her top lip and then into the part where her lips met. She pressed her lips inward together and then relaxed them again. He said, "those flowers are you and I" and I want you to stay here with me forever. He stopped walking for a moment and cupped her face in his cold hands and leaned so close she could feel the breeze from his words. He whispered "You know I love you, only you" and as she did not see but could sense the movement around the trees of others nearby. She knew she should run and see if she could find the meadow on her own and call out to the other girl in the bright cloth maybe for help...she knew the girl was somewhere waiting to  her if she could because the girl was so kind from the beginning...but she realized she would bind her time, have patience, and it would work out for the best in the end...

Being alone.
