“Do you take this man to be your loftily wedded husband?”
“I do,” says a woman.
“And do you,” the priest looks at the man, “take this woman to be you wife?”
“I do,” says the man.
“You may now kiss the bride.”
Mikey, the man, gently kisses his wife, Koreana. It was a quick five second kiss followed by a slight shriek and a giggle from Koreana. She was thrilled to be marrying Mikey Klankton. He was the greatest guy in the world to her. But was she the greatest woman to him? I guess we will find out.
Their wedding wasn’t a big one. No after party or anything special. Just a two person wedding. Or three if you count the priest. Why such a small wedding? It was a private, secret ceremony. Nobody was supposed to know about it. Koreana is only seventeen and Mikey is nineteen. Her parents hate and despise him. They beat and abused Koreana when they found out they were engaged. Which was only two weeks ago. And now they had snuck off to get married. Wow! So soon.
Mikey had the money to take care of them and support them so everything would be fine, right? Even though he had to buy a house far, far away from everyone they knew. And the house was in a very small town that seemed very quiet and odd. But they were happy. Too happy to think anything of it. Until three months later when stuff in their house started disappearing.
“Mikey, I can’t find my toothbrush!” Koreana fusses. “Something is going on here and I’m tired of all our stuff just vanishing.”
“Me too. I can’t find my shoes now,” Complains Mikey. “I’m gonna go into town and check things out, okay?”
“Okay. I’ll get supper ready while your out. Be back by seven.”
“Alright, I’ll see you in two hours.”
Mikey walks out the door shoeless into the town to find out what is going on. Maybe someone here knows what’s wrong. Maybe, maybe not. While he is gone his wife cooks as she said she would.
Mikey looks all over the town. It was very odd. He couldn’t find anyone. What happened? Where did they all go? Some town meeting they weren’t informed about? What on earth is going on in this town? Mikey didn’t know the answer to that, but he would soon find out.
“Not only household objects are disappearing, the people of this village are too.” Mikey hears a voice.
“Who is there? Who are you?” Mikey asks.
“This town and it’s people are a disgrace. They will all vanish. I gave them enough time to prove themselves, but they have failed. Now go home to your wife or soon you will disappear too,” the voice finished and was gone.
Mikey sped off to his house quickly after hearing those words. He knew what would happen if he didn’t. On his way he tripped over a branch and almost lost his balance. He finally reached his house a few minutes later. He opened the front door, but it was completely silent. There was no sound of anything to be heard.
“Koreana?! Hello? I’m home. It’s only..” He looks at his wrist where his watch used to be.
“Great. Now the time is disappearing,” He makes a little joke to himself.
He calls for his wife a few more times, but gets no answer in return. He searches all over the house. Nothing. All of her stuff has also vanished with her.
“No! Not my wife! What have you done with her?!” He yells frantically.
“You were late. You got here at 7:12. You are late.” The voice returned.
“Twelve minutes and you take my wife from me!”
“You told her seven and no later. You lied!”
“Who are you to control the lives of us humans?! We can take care of ourselves!”
“Humans are-”
“We don’t need you!” Mikey yells angrily interrupting him.
“I see…I’ll make a deal with you. Do these things I ask of you and I’ll give you your wife back.”
“My wife, our stuff, and everyone else. I want the whole town back.”
“Demanding…Alright. First, clean this house from top to bottom. I want it spotless.”
So, determined Mikey cleans the house as good as he can. He cleaned all over the house. Every floor, every room, every single inch of the house. He cleaned everything three times to make sure he got everything.
“Okay, I’ve done what you asked. What now?”
“Second, set the table, light candles, and cook a big feast for your wife. Make it as romantic as you can. It also has to be delicious.”
Again, Mikey does as the voice asks him to. He sets the table as nicely as he can. With a blue and white flower embroidered tablecloth, plates, and silverware. He puts a dozen roses in a vase and places it in the center of the table. Then lights two white candles and sets them on each side of the vase far enough away so it won’t set it on fire. Then he cooks for hours and hours until he finally gets it perfect. He then sets the food on the table.
“Okay, I’ve done what you asked. Now what?”
“Third and last thing to do…There is a girl waiting outside your house. Invite her in and be very polite to her. I am watching your every move. If everything you have done is perfect to her then she will give you a kiss after dinner and turn into your wife.”
“Will she really be Koreana?
“Yes. Everything will return back to normal. You have my word.”
Mikey walks outside and there he sees the girl standing maybe ten feet away from his front door just staring at his house like it’s a pretty view. She didn’t look a thing like Koreana, but he would believe what the voice told him.
“Hey beautiful. I have made dinner for you. Let’s go inside.”
He take her hand and she follows him inside. He shows her around the house.
“It’s very nice. I want to start a family here,” she says.
Okay. So far, so good. Now he takes her to the dining room and pulls her chair out. She sits down and he pushes her in.
“Mmm. It’s delicious! It tastes like perfection!” She exclaims.
“Really?” He says with spark flickering in his eyes.
She walks over to him and forces her lips upon his, but he jerks away. ‘She will kiss you and turn into your wife.’ He remembers the voice’s words. He tries again, but again he fails to.
“I’m sorry. I..I can’t do this. I can’t. It’s the same as cheating on my wife. I will not cheat on my wife just to get her back. She is worth more than that.”
The lady in front of him disappears and the voice says, “You have passed. I am very proud of you.”
“It was a test?!” Mikey says.
Everything turns black, pitch black and Mikey passes out.
“Honey. Honey, wake up! You’re gonna be late for work,” says a lady’s voice.
“Koreana?” Mikey opens his eyes. “Koreana!”
He hugs her tightly. Everything was as the voice said. Back to normal. Did it actually happen or was it just a nightmare? He didn’t know, nor did he care. He loved her more than anything and wouldn’t risk ever losing her. He would be very careful from now on. The whole town was also back. Everything was back to normal.
