“So this was a great idea to have a nice dinner without the kids?” Ryan said sitting down in his chair.
“Yeah it was.” Alexis mumbled drinking her glass of water nervously trying to compose herself.
“So anything interesting happen today?”
“Interesting? No. you?” yes is what she really wanted to say but she wasn’t ready yet.
“Well I saw the secretary and my boss sending each other dirty messages all day.”
“And how did you see that?”
“Well I waiting for my meeting with my boss ad I stood behind the secretary’s desk and read her messages and they were definitely from him.”
“You know it’s wrong to read other people’s messages.”
“Yeah but I was bored.”
“And that makes it right.”
“Yes it does.” He said and the waiter came over to their table and set a bottle of wine their table. Alexis was so mad when he did that. She didn’t want there to be an instant clue that she was pregnant because she couldn’t drink it.
“What can I get for you tonight?”
“Baby back ribs for me.” Alexis said.
“Sure I’ll I have the same.” Ryan told the waiter.
“Do you want to share?” Alexis asked and Ryan nodded so they changed their order to one basket instead of two. Ryan poured wine into both of their glasses when the waiter left.
“You’ve never wanted ribs before.”
“They just sounded good.”
“Oh okay. So why’d you suggest dinner on a Wednesday night?”
“Do I have to have a reason?”
“No I’m just curious.”
“Well if you’re going to be curious you should be curious about other things.”
“Like what?”
“I don’t know.”
“Are you having an affair?”
“No and so what if I am?”
“Why are you being so… so…?”
“So what?”
“Bitchy?”
“I am not being bitchy.”
“Then what are you being?”
“I guess I’m being hormonal.”
“Hormonal why?”
“I don’t know.”
“Is it that time of the month again?”
“That is such a jackass thing to say and am I ever hormonal during that time?”
“No.”
“Exactly.”
“Then what is it?” he yelled.
Alexis didn’t answer his question she needed to cool down for a second. She grabbed her water and started to quickly drink it. Ryan noticed that his wine glass was already filled twice and she hadn’t even started on hers and the water was going fast. Then the waiter brought out the food. And then Ryan figured it out.
“You’re pregnant.” He whispered when the waiter left.
Alexis nodded her head.
“I can’t believe it. This is so exciting.”
“I know.”
“Why didn’t you come out and tell me once you knew?”
“Because I wanted this time to be special and once I got here I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“Well I’m glad you picked dinner to celebrate.”
“How’d you figure it out?”
“The ribs, you not drinking the wine, and being hormonal.”
“Oh well I sort of ordered the ribs for that reason.”
“Well that was smart.”
“And because they tasted really good.” She said digging into them. Ryan laughed and she smiled and suddenly she wasn’t scared anymore. Ryan always had that affect on her. Ever since they started dating even if they did get mad at each other he always knew how to make it right or make her feel better.
