Ryan was at boot camp when he received the news that Alexis had been hospitalized. No one would tell him anything other than she was in the hospital. He was given permission to leave and in two hours he was on a plane on his way home to Alexis. He arrived at the airport at six o’clock where his parents picked him up and drove him to the hospital. Ryan could sense there was something they knew that he didn’t but they wouldn’t tell him when he asked if something happened. Once they arrived at the hospital Ryan tried to remain calm but all he wanted to do was run down the hall to find his wife. He had seen all his friends and family in the waiting room and he was happy to know that so many people cared so much for him and Alexis to wait here for whatever was wrong with her.When he reached Alexis’s room he saw she was sleeping and a nurse was checking up on her. Up behind him came the doctor who startled him due to the fact he was so shocked to see Alexis lying there. “Are you Ryan?” the doctor asked. Ryan nodded since we couldn’t speak. “Well your wife is lucky.” She told him when he turned around “Why?” he knew she was lucky be alive but he didn’t know what happened. “If your friends weren’t there we probably couldn’t save her or the babies?” Ryan had zoned out when the doctor was talking because he couldn’t take the whole situation in but when he heard “babies” his ears perked right up. “What do you mean babies?” he didn’t know what the word meant he was so messed up from knowing Alexis was in the hospital he didn’t know that it wasn’t just her and the nurse in that room. “Well she’s about 6 weeks pregnant.” The doctor explained. “How we’ve only been married for six weeks?” that seemed to close to date; he must have worked fast. “Well it only takes one time.” She said almost implying he was stupid. “I know I had this talk last year in health class. And what do you mean babies? Isn’t it just a baby?” he never liked English and the difference between plural and singular nouns. “No she is pregnant with twins.” She reassured him. “No kidding.” He was flabbergasted at the thought being a father. The word father sounded so weird he was only 18 and he was going to have two. “Nope, no kidding and the babies are fine it was just a false alarm.” She said smiling like it was supposed to be the happiest day of his life when he still didn’t know what happened. “May I ask what really happened and why she was sent here?” he questioned. “It’s probably better that your family tells you what happened I only know the minor details.” She said walking away leaving Ryan all alone looking into a window to see the girl of his dream sleeping and the thought of being a father running through his mind at 300 mph. he didn’t know what to think of the situation but he knew he needed answers.He turned on his heel and ran back into the waiting room to see happy faces on everyone. They all thought that he would be excited to be a father and apparently they knew before him which didn’t make the situation better. He opened the doors and everybody clapped at the unhappy father to be. They all stopped was they saw the expression on his face and waited for him to say something. “is anyone going to tell me what happened?” he yelled making everybody jump five feet before Beau raised his hand and offered his version of the story which was the true version since he was basically there the whole time Alexis was being harassed by Nathan.Beau and Ryan left the room and towards the cafeteria. Beau had explained how Nathan was hitting on Alexis and that he threatened Nathan but nothing seemed to work. He told Ryan about the night she was almost raped by him and how they beat him up. “I shouldn’t have left.” Ryan said putting his head in his hands. “You had no way of controlling it.” Beau said trying to make things better. “Yes I could have. If I wasn’t so selfish and joined air force this would have never happened.” He shook a bit as he said this. It almost sounded as if he was crying and when he lifted his head his face was red and blotchy with tears running down his face. Beau had never seen Ryan cry except for when their dog died when Ryan was 7 and he was 5. Beau knew that Ryan really loved Alexis now he always thought they were stupid for getting married to Alexis but it seemed like the smartest thing Ryan ever did.
