HERO AND AN ANGEL

HERO AND AN ANGEL

A HERO AND AN ANGEL             Five years ago if you had asked me who my hero was I would have laughed and told you that there was no such thing. However my opinion has been drastically changed. I now have a hero who also happens to be an angel named Emmy.            In my eyes a hero is someone or something that drives you forward. Something that makes you strive for success. A hero is there for you twenty-four-seven. They hand you their hearts, hold you up, carry you forward, and expect nothing in return. This is exactly what Emmy did for me, and through it I learned something untangible… Heroes aren’t just a figure that we look up to and want to be like… they are angels too.            Now Emmy isn’t your everyday image of a hero. She’s not a firefighter, or a perimedic. She’s not an officer or a surgeon. She is a horse, a teacher, and a friend. However by being a horse she was the greatest teacher I knew and the only one that could fully capture my mind.            I remember the first time I touched her. It had taken me hours to get close to her but when I finally did I realized she had just taught me one of the hardest lessons ever learned in childhood…. Patience. The next lesson I learned while I sobbed into her flaxen mane. That lesson was love and kindness. When no one was there to hold me I learned what friendship meant as she wrapped her neck around me. I learned compassion when I couldn’t stand and she would let me sit upon her back. Yet the lesson that had the most impact one me was forgiveness. Anytime I was angry she patiently allowed me to take it out on her and never loved me any less because of it.            A year ago I was dealing with a lot. Things that I would’ve cared to forget about but instead where coming back and haunting me. I was under stress and needed to talk. I was at the breaking point when I turned to Emmy. If it hadn’t been for her, I would have broken and I may have never had the chance to get the pieces of my life back together.            I have no doubt that she saved my life many times. She was out in the pasture waiting when I had haunting nightmares, she was there when I needed to cry, but most of all she was there when I needed someone to listen. When I needed someone to only respond with eyes of compassion and not words of misunderstanding or force, she was there.            I never realized what I had until it was long gone. I never thought God could hear me until He double answered me. You see When I begged God for a hero… that wasn’t all He sent. Inside that little hero I found my angel too. A gorgeous blue eyed sweet heart that I called Emmy Lou.

Calypso32 I simply loved this, My TN walker mare Jessie did the same for me, and though she's no longer with me, her lessons still are. You articulated the rare bond between horse and horsewoman, Bueno!~L
