Twilight Haters (The Rant)
So there are a lot of people out there that really, really dislike the Twilight series. Whatever, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and all that good stuff. It doesn't really matter, since they are in the minority. But anyways, the majority among the reasons why people don't like Twilight is it "ruins the image of vampires" and "vampires are supposed to be vicious soul-suckers and these vamps are sugar coated power puff girls." Well, to start off, NEWSFLASH: Vampires. Aren't. Real. Complaining that Twilight's vampires aren't portrayed correctly is like getting upset over a picture of a Unicorn with a purple horn instead of a white one. Besides, it is most likely that the only "normal" vampires you know of are the ones part of the AMERICAN culture. Believe it or not, vampires are a part of ancient myths from all over the world, and each story is different. Those from other countries might read Dracula and say, "What the heck is all this crap? This is ALL wrong, vampires are soo not like that!" Both them and you Twilight haters are wrong in the same way: you can't say a particular type of vampire is "right" or "wrong," because they don't even exhist! Another random example: do you have any idea how many different Santa Clauses there are out there?
There ends my first major complaint. Here goes the second one. A lot of people go into Twilight thinking, "Cool, this is about vampires, there's gonna be some heart-staking and neck-biting tonight!" and don't even realize that, hey, it's a romance novel. The major theme of the book is not about vampires in general. In actuality, the vampires are only there to help portray a message. Twilight is about (aside from the Bella loves Edward thing) a clan of vampires that don't want to be what is expected out of them, and instead try to overcome that and become evolved members of society, despite the fact that it brings them constant pain. Then when Edward falls in love with Bella, since her blood is especially attractive in smell to him, he is put through even more pain and temptation to go ahead and bite her... just this one human. He instead consciously puts himself through even more pain, the temptation and resist both, just to be with her, because he loves her more than anything in the entire world. Some people who read the series and watched the movie were too distracted with the fact that Edward and his family were "prissy vampires" to really pay attention and recognize the underlying message. Just because a book is about vampires, that doesn't mean it's going to necessarily be the type of vampires you are partial to, nor does it mean it will be focused on and only on the theme of killing and horror. A final statement, I just wish people who don't really like Twilight could just leave us fans alone and let us have our fun. Just because you don't enjoy it doesn't mean we cant. This is how I end today's rant. |
