It's not just drug literature, it's an important part of American culture for that time frame in society. To never read and learn how something came to be, is to never truly understand it.

To get to a "higher level," you must deconstruct your mind. Wash yourself of preconceived notions, start to imagine what was previously unimaginable. Combine words, phrases, ideas, together that you would have not even thought of before. Understand relationships previously unseen, debate over plausibility and how it affects your everyday life.

I've never read any sort of drug literature, simply because I don't care to.

Kinda, sorta. There was one specific time I was sitting on a friend's couch in complete darkness, and he turned on a Vizio television. I felt as if the television was being drawn to me, and my mind went racing. I was about to ask if I had been dosed but it started to wear off.
