I have a question. (I'm not trying to prove the Bible wrong.)
IF God is a forgiving and loving God, then what is the purpose of the Ten Commandments. Wouldn't they seem kind of pointless if God would just forgive you if you broke a rule anyway? By the way, I'm not trying to prove the Bible wrong or anything, I just want to know, and yes I am a Christian myself. Oh yeah, one more thing. Somewhere in Deuteronomy it says something along the lines of "Those who do not believe in me shall be stoned to death" or something like that. I know it says they should be stoned but I don't remeber the exact verse. Anyway, my point is, I thought God loved you no matter what.

The purpose of the Ten Commandments is to lay a few ground rules to peaceful living with one another. Think about it... if you break one of the Ten, someone ends up hurting, weather it be God, you, or someone else. If disobeyed, here's who it hurts:
1. "You shall have no other Gods before me": hurts God.
2. "You shall not make for yourself an idol...": hurts God.
3. "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your god.": hurts God.
4. "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.": hurts you and God.
5. "Honor your father and mother.": hurts your parents.
6. "You shall not murder.": hurts the victim, their family and friends.
7. "You shall not commit adultery.": hurts the wife/husband's spouse and family.
8. "You shall not steal.": hurts the victims.
9. "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.": hurts the one being prosecuted.
10. "You shall not covet your neighbor's house... (and any of his stuff)": hurts you and your neighbor.
...clearer :)?
To answer your second question, love doesn't mean shielding you from pain. In fact, it sometimes means the exact opposite. It means you care enough to make the other a better person, which is not done easily. If a parent's child is acting up, shouldn't the parent give their kid a spanking (or something like that)? What would happen if only good things happened to their kid? They wouldn't know right from wrong! If God sees his children doing things wrong, why shouldn't we be punished? But, like most parents, it's out of love that punishment occurs. And it's not easy to deal out. There is a verse that often gets forgotten: "...for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments." (Exodus 20:4)

Well it's not like you can just sin like a gambling, crack-smoking, hooker and then ask God for forgiveness and then everything is happy again. No, it doesn't work like that. God does forgive, but you have to do your part to try and be a better Christian, which is one of the Bible's main lessons. I don't remember that verse, but it says in the Bible that those who don't believe will go to Hell. That doesn't mean that God doesn't love you, it means that you denied God, your creator, your Father, the person who will love you for eternity, and you will be punished for it. God loves everyone, God loves gambelers, God loves murderors, God loves crack-dealers, God loves crack-smokers, God loves everone. Just because you don't follow God doesn't mean He doesn't love you, it means you don't love Him. Anywho, just because you ask God to forgive you doesn't make you have a clean slate every time you pray. You have to ask for forgiveness, and try to be better, we're all Sinners, but God forgives us if we ask Him whole-heartedly and truly. In my own Christian beliefs we pray before a meal, and praying before a meal doesn't make it automatically clean and healthy, it's accepting the food as a gift from God and a blessing from Him that makes praying what it is. Asking for Forgiveness doesn't mean it makes it all better. Forgiveness means that He doesn't carry hate in His heart for what you did, it doesn't mean that it's all ok. You still sinned, you still broke his Word and Law. God does forgive you, yes, but that doesn't give you a right to go sin like the devil and then ask for forgiveness.
