Are narcissists who allow fan participation only as a venue for repeating themselves and as a means of placating the fragile egos of said fans, whom want to delude themselves into thinking the hosts really care about their thoughts, some of which are far more cogent than anything the host has to say or can think of.

Of course they're narcissists, they probably record every single show, and watch themselves on tv all day long... I think being a narcissist is the only requirement for being a talk show host... I knew it was my true calling... haha!
