Grounded

In advance, this is apparently an absurd question. A friend of mine gave me a shirt yesterday with "Grounding will not be tolerated" printed on the front. I expressed my confusion to her and for some odd reason one of a few inquiries elicited a laugh. I had questioned the relevance of the saying, stating that I haven’t been grounded in at least 6 years and also that 17 was perhaps a little old to be grounded, anyway. I was under the impression that in reality this disciplinary action was less convenient and rarely used once people grew into the last few years as a minor. Considering my upbringing and the lack of domination and authority that took place, I can understand that it’s possible that the idea just seems foreign to me, but are people in their adolescence often “grounded”? Does it work? This is quite confusing to me. Other avenues seem more effective than a forcing hand, and less likely to be met with opposition and violent retaliation…particularly from someone subject to extreme changes in disposition and mood.

I haven't heard any acquaintance fussing over being grounded since elementary school. Maybe that would be due to my lack of sympathy and/or my tendency to agree with their parents. Perhaps I would have been grounded more often if I hadn't been so ridiculous. Still, quite peculiar.

But it usually works if they're grounded from something they LOOOOVE and cannot live without (mostly the phone and computer).

They happen. Don't you have 14-17 year old friends that complain about being grounded (or other means of "discipline" (having their phone/computer/radio/blackberry/gaming system tooken away)? I don't think I was ever grounded...Then again I had nothing to rebel/go against! Hahahahha. It works, I think. My friends have just said, "This sucks! I can't do anything I want! Wah!". I don't think I'd like being grounded...Not that it'd have much effect, hahah. It usually lasts for a week and then the parents leave with a smile on their satisfied, as if that'll stop the child from getting drunk and wrecking their car (again) and ending up half naked on a table next weekend.
