The Christmas Truce
I would like to tell you a true story about World History
I believe it was the year 1914, during World War I. The Germans and the British were fighting on the front line in the trenches. The night before Christmas, the British heard the Germans singing Christmas Carols. They were intrigued by what they heard and started singing their own Christmas Carols. Some would say that they were singing the same songs in different languages at the same time.
The next day a British soldier came out of the trenches and started approaching the Germans. He had a small Christmas Tree in his hands. At first the Germans thought this was some kind of trick. As the soldier continued to approach they realized there was no trickery in his heart.
All the soldiers on the front line, in this particular area, from both sides started coming out of the trenches. They began to shake hands and communicate. Although they were at war with one another, the humanity they felt was astonishing.
They met in the middle at "No Mans Land" this is where their dead soldiers lie. They helped each other bury there dead, held services, and prayed.
One of the soldiers had a football and they played football - Rugby -
This went on all day long, word started getting back to headquarters and they were appalled. They were taking down names of officers and soldiers whom participated in this so that they could be disciplined later.
As the day died and morning was born the soldiers didn't know what to do. They didn't want to fight the men they had befriended the day before. They continued their gathering until someone sent up from headquarters shot and killed a German soldier in cold blood. This ended the Christmas Truce and the soldiers went back to killing each other.
I just wanted to share this with all of you. These were different times. Times were men could set aside their differences and come together on a day that they all believed was the birth of Jesus.
We all have different beliefs but the one thing that remains true about this story is that time has passed. We no longer live in a time where we fight with Honor and Dignity. Where men can no longer settle their differences with a good old fair fist fight. What has happened to us? Where are we headed? How do we get back? Guess these are questions we would all like answered.
Doesn't matter if we all believe in God or not. We can still rejoice in the happiness that this time of year seems to bring most people. Set aside our differences and be giving. Help your neighbor, friend or stranger.
I didn't know exactly where I was going with this story, but hope it made you feel something special.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
