Leaving the Bear Lake Campgrounds

Leaving the Bear Lake Campgrounds
(A Toast)

Sitting on this log in the Bear Lake campgrounds
Looking to the east where the sunshine peaks
The campfire's cooled and gone, on a quiet Sunday morn
And we’re packing up our tents, to civilization

“Gather round young scouts by the fire pits
Bring forth your faith and leave about your fits”
They all start quoting psalms, and I’m once again alone
As an atheist who fumbles on holy songs

I’ve been abiding by the oath memorized with honor
Listing down the laws but this “reverence” I ponder
I see a far off deer, as I shoulder heavy gear
On the mountain pass our loyal troop once cleared

So a toast to you, my troop six-eighty-five
Badges on my sash, count the tears I cried
Garrett carries on and Ethan will be strong
But I cant contradict the oath with lies
God does not reflect in silent eyes
