I remember when you gave me Petey

and all those sleep overs we’ve had

I remember watching fireworks

and how watching Jeopardy made you glad

I remember eating chocolate ice cream on a cone

and trying to sleep through your snores

I remember going to the hair dresser with you

and helping you run errands at the store

I remember going to the auction

and complaining when I wouldn’t get my way

I remember all the family functions at your house

and the stories you’d tell my everyday

I remember how your door was always open

and how I ran to your house when I was upset

I remember when you were in the hospital

and that’s one memory i wish I’d forget

I remember hearing you wouldn’t live much longer

and seeing you on that plain hospital bed

I remember watching your brown eyes fade out

and immediately knowing that you were dead

I remember going to your funeral

and seeing you in the coffin, face caked with makeup

I remember zoning out during the ceremony

and wishing that you would wake up

I remember watching your coffin lowered into the grave

and I kept thinking, if only you could have been saved
