Midnight Date
It happened a few weeks ago,
this strange encounter, straight out of the blue
Let me tell you what took place
I swear, no fingers crossed, it’s true:
It’d been a dreary, ghostly night
when I chanced upon an extraordinary sight
Two white skeletons were seated at my closed fruit stand
A slice of watermelon each, held in their fragile hands
They looked up at me with empty eye sockets
Grinning widely with rotted gum pockets
Their bones were tinged a translucent blue
from the illuminating glow of the perfect full moon.
Brittle and hollow, the skeletons clanked in sync
dropping on the counter coins that seemed to wink
I stared in bewilderment and speechless surprise
as they walked hand in hand, fading into the blanket of night.
