Unaffected

I act like I'm unaffected
I look straight and I stand tall
The piercing words that she says
I pretend they don't hurt at all
The half smile on my face
Is to keep the tears from falling
To think I'd look weak
Would be so appalling
I try to hold on to anger
Because she changes it all around
To make it even stranger
Her anger can't be found
The yelling and the screaming
Are still ringing in my ears
But she acts like nothing happened
Like no one shed any tears
When it happens again
The pain is so much stronger
To make even worse
I think about it longer
Sometimes she scares me
And I don't know what to say
So the best thing for me to do
Is to turn and look away
To be somewhere else
To wish it wasn't true
To think I don't believe
But in the end I always do
My heart is left unprotected
And the words are still there
Then I begin to wonder
Did she ever care?
