The Beginning Of The End

She clung to the steel bars of the fire escape, five floors above the alley, and wondered, "How did I get up here?" A dusty breeze blew her sandy brown hair into her eyes, and she brushed it away as if it were just another one of her problems. Gazing down on the litter infested alleyway, she set her sights on a rusty gray bike propped up against the overflowing, foul-odored dumpster, set out for morning trash pickup. She thought of all the ways her life was like this piece of junk: dirty, used, an object of no one's affection. Her thoughts wandered off to the night before, when her boyfriend had kicked her out of his apartment and out of his life. No remorse, no pain, no sorrow. She was almost distraught; almost devastated; almost sad. They had been together for a year and a half. But now, she felt nothing. Numbed of emotion, a tear welled up in her eye. She almost cried. Almost. She found herself climbing higher and higher: sixth story, seventh story, eighth story. As she reached the roof, she edged her way along the gravel-covered roof to the two foot ledge. Now, this was the only thing between her and an escape. She could leave all her worry, all her angst, all her anger behind. She scaled the ledge and sat, unphased by the strong gusts of wind, the blur of the cars, the constant commotion of the passersby on the streets eighty or so feet below. The cold, gusty wind carried her breath away in a cloud of despair. The vapor dissipated, much like her hopes for the future, for a future, for any future. Her eyes followed a black and white blotted dove soaring gracefully through the air. She became captivated by its rhythmic movement. Slowly, the bird flew farther and farther away from her. She reached out for it, only to realize it wasn't flying farther away from her, she was falling farther from it. Floating through the air as if she were a feather, all her hopes, all her dreams, escaped the boundaries of her reach. It was almost over. Almost.
