Mistaken

I run my hands across your shoulders

Wrap my arms around your neck.

I gaze into your clear blue eyes.

And kiss you on the lips.

My body pressed in close to yours.

So safe within your arms.

When suddenly it’s over.

You tell me that we’re through.

I get this feeling in my chest.

So tight, I hardly breathe.

The tears begin to flow.

The days of ‘us’ are finished.

And now we’re only friends.

But still my heart is longing.

To feel you once again.

To know that I am yours.

To have and then to hold.

Still my mind is not believing.

No, this can’t be the end.

And yet I know it is.

The truth that is so simple.

Is killing me inside.

When you told me that you loved me,

It wasn’t for all time.
