Something to Say

I found you crying in your shed
You were all torn up about something your father had said
I brushed your eyes away with my hand
And now you look up at me in the eyes 
withholding a certain demand
 
"He said he doesn't love me, that I was just a mistake."
I peer down at her now suddenly awake
She sobbs in my chest, and hicups in my lap
I'm trying to think something to say but all I feel is one big gap.

"I'm sorry." I tell her I try to console, the words just sort of roll
off of my tongue, the words are automatic."
The moment is empty, I can't tell she's so afraid.
She lays down on me, I hold here
but in my mind, she runs away.
