I Harden My Heart...

Can you open your eyes?
Can you see that I care?
Can you see that I meant it,
When I said I'd be there?

But I harden my heart,
and I try not to feel.
I try to tell myself,
that this isn't real.

I try to stay calm,
I try not to cry.
But I know there's no reason,
to bother to try.

And this is my fault,
that I know.
But I try to forget it,
try not to let it show.

So I harden my heart,

But I know that it's real,
I know from the hurt.
It will scar me forever,
This I firmly assert.

It will never feel better,
Some wounds never heal.
But I find myself asking,
"Is this really real?"
