The Sentence

  • As I heard the gavel fall, As I sat in court that day, I thought I understood what the judge had to say. He said, I sentence you now sir, to five years for your crime, You've come into my courtroom for the final time. The bailiff took me by the arm and led me through a door, A door that once I passed I'd be changed forever more. As I sat in my lonely cell and thought the whole day long, I thought I heard the judge but oh how I was wrong. Because what he really said as he pronounced the sentence on me I sentence you to life... A life of inconsistency. I sentence you to be marked forever more, I sentence your sweet loving family to now walk out the door. I sentence your dear children to be ripped away from you. I sentence people to always question everything you do. I sentence you to unemployment cause you'll now hear them say, Thank you for your application but we don't have any jobs today. I sentence you to a place where hate and anger rule, A place where if you show some love your anybody's fool. I sentence you to endless noise no privacy at all, I sentence you to empty hands each day at your mail call. I sentence you to make no decisions They'll all be made for you and when I let you out the door you better know just what to do. I sentence you to sit and wait among the perverse and insane, and if you make it out again you'll never be the same. I sentence friends to leave your side forget that you exist. I sentence you to sit and think on all the things you miss. I sentence you to a human warehouse high fences and razor wire. I sentence you to dig some ditches knee deep in muck and mire. I sentence you to a human zoo caged up like some pray. I sentence you to a life of fear you'll fight most everyday. I sentence you day-in, day-out to the same old boring routine. I sentence you to change your ways but I won't give you the means. I sentence you to a daily menu of endless, mindless chatter. I sentence you to lose all things, the things that really matter. I sentence you upon release to report to your P.O and if you slip up even once it's back to jail you go. I sentence you to low self worth your the lowest of the low. I sentence you to hate yourself, I sentence you to know; to know that with your sentence your a shame and a disgrace, I sentence you to hang your head and cry the day you walk out of this place. I sentence you the day walk and I decide to set you free to change a be a different man and do it instantly. Yes, I thought I heard that judge but oh how I was wrong. I thought I knew my sentence and I thought I knew how long. Now I'm not saying it's not my fault I ended up in here. I did the crime, I'll do the time and never shed a tear. And even though there is nothing here to help me change my ways, I know there’s one who will stand by me and led me through the days. He gives me strength and wisdom to somehow make it through and when I walk through the door he'll show me what to do. He'll show me it's not about opinions of mere man. He shows me he's the only one who has my master plan. So even though that sentence judge was meant to do me harm. He did me one good favor, he sentence me into the peace of my savior's arms
