Love
I could love you like Van Gogh loved the stars.
I could love you like the blue and black and yellow paints he placed onto canvas loved his touch.
And I could love you like the bristles loved the brush strokes.
But I don't.
I could love you.
I could love you like Michelangelo loved sculpture.
I could love you like the cold clay loved his delicate hands.
And I could love you like the ages have loved David.
But I don't.
I could love you.
I could love you like ivory keys loved Mozart.
I could love you like the quarter notes loved their places in his melodies.
And I could love you like they still do.
But I don't.
I do love you.
But not for the same simple reasons as everyone loves Van Gogh,
Or Michelangelo,
Or Mozart.
I love you for the imperfections.
I love you for the way that individual hairs stand on end and apart.
I love you for the way your bitten off fingernails scratch my hand when I hold yours.
I love you for the way one foot's a little bigger than the other.
To love you for your perfections and disregard the rest could work out just fine,
But not for me.
I love you for you, imperfections and all.
