When I was a little girl, I wanted a pink bicycle

but I needed you to teach me how to ride

You just smiled your smile; you made it so worthwhile

when you spent that afternoon with me outside

But much to my surprise and with wide-open eyes

my laughter turned to tears from my frown

you hurried up to see the scrape upon my knee

I got when I fell off my bike and to the ground

And you held me in your arms

you made me feel so loved and so I said

Don't let go....Not just yet

Hold me close and don't forget

that I need you still, so if you will

please mommy, don't let go just yet

When I was a teenager, I fell so hard in love

and you, above them all, knew how I felt

All the times we walked... you listened as I talked

about this boy who could make my young heart melt

I had to face my fears... this boy, he brought me tears

and you said that I would move on from the pain

I admit I didn't believe and I felt so deceived

but in the end, you were right about the rain

Still, you held me in your arms

you made me feel so loved and so I said

Now that I am grown and I have children of my own

it broke my heart to learn you were dying

now I stay up late with so much on my plate

and mostly, I just find myself crying

Daddy called me so I'd know that tonight you were going home

and I rushed to be there by your side

You said, "Don't be alarmed. Just hold me in your arms

and please, sweet girl, try not to cry."

So I held you in my arms but I could not hide the tears

I just prayed you felt the love you made me feel through all these years

and so I said
