Shieldless

SHIELDLESS

His purple velvet cape bellowed in a gale

As he stands before the crowd he wishes he could sail

Where titles, riches, and power drowns in a swale

And exposure not determined by the hour of worldly hail

She walks alone on a Trossachs pier

No family, no title, in aura meek as a deer

The mountains surround her and make her fear

But she has hourless power, and riches sincere

I tell him I love him, and what's on my mind

My heart is exposed and not easily inclined 

It's very hard to feel both so empty and so full

Waiting for his answer, between the wave's steady lull

Defenseless in my baring I am a bird in a storm

But I panic not, and my truth sews my soul torn

The powerful and the invisible are equal in size

For our souls are all shieldless in this kind of life
