What It’s Like

There is a man half a world away

Who is holding my heart every day

He is sacrificing so very, very much

Oh, how I miss his tender touch

We have had our share of fights

Leading to many sleepless nights

Words filled with so much stress

Left feeling nothing but distress

Even with all of that being said

I miss him at night when I rest my head

He can be an ass, that’s for sure

But for my sickness, he’s my cure

He was sent to a land filled with hate

With gun in hand, having to mediate

Their language he does not speak

And he deals with that week after week

He has never said that he is afraid

Just that he wishes he’d have stayed

At home with us, where he belongs

Instead of over there, righting their wrongs

A soldier caught in the midst of a war

Having to tally and keep up the score

His family has been left far behind

But he trudges on with them in mind

The kids miss their Daddy with all their heart

They don’t understand why they had to part

Mommy, why did Daddy have to go?

They ask as their eyes fill with sorrow

Don’t worry honey, Daddy will come back

Just as soon as he is done working in Iraq

He has to go and get the really bad guys

he misses you more than there are stars in the skies

With every beat of Daddy’s heart he loves you

And he wanted me to give this to you

So here is a kiss on your forehead and a smile

Just know that Daddy will come home after a while…..

It is so very hard to be the one who has to stay

Not knowing what will come each and every day

Having to live your life feeling completely alone

Finding yourself sitting and staring at the phone

You count down the days as soon as he leaves

Telling him that all is well, hoping he believes

All that you say, as silent tears roll down your face

and you hold it in, thankful he can’t see your face

You live for the phone calls from a distant land

Walking around all day with the phone in your hand

And when it rings, your heart skips a beat or two

And you answer so quickly, Honey is that you?

Just for the kids, you put on your happy face

Knowing that a another fire fight just took place

You decide not to watch the news anymore

And dread every knock you hear at the door

So many emotions wash over you at one time

Just to have him home, you’d give your last dime

Deployments suck any way you look at it

But I know that we will make it through it

Again….
