Morning's Clarity

i see a moment, a moment of beauty
and i know that it's so much more than what i see
and i can't help but think
that if i could write it down in ink
or if i could just write one thing
that good, one thing worth reading
if i could take that one flash of light
and show it even half as bright
if i could cup it in my hands
but i watch as it expands
and i write and i write
words and words, they melt, contrite
strings of words that only spin
tangling and exploding from within
worthless words, that don't mean a thing
and that leads me to thinking
what's the point?
my talent is to disappoint
thinking, if i could just
just do what i must
but i can't
and i can't
that's all that i should write
that's what shows in the light
because that is all that is true
even though it's more than what i knew
all that's inside me is hemlock
pull back before you go into shock
i am a bitter stinging fantasy
this is one thing i can guarantee
i don't think i even could
bring myself to say that i am good
it's like calling a puddle an ocean
if there is such a notion
it's like saying that i deserve you
and i give the devil his due
because it is the cruelest of lies
behind my eyes
it is pain given free
it is me.
