Lost, But Not Forgotten

I'm sitting in a corner. It's so dark and so cold. I can't believe the moment when I stood up so bold. I thought for a moment whether I should fight or protect. I never really realized how many people's lives I'd affect. My body went limp, and my eyes stared frozen. I couldn't believe the path that I'd just chosen. I made a decision that saved more than one life. But I knew that I'd never again see my kids or my wife. I jumped out of a humvee. All eyes were focused on me. I got the enemy's attention, now our comrades could flee. But there wasn't a single place to where I could retreat. I could hear my heart racing, and I could feel every beat. A few of their men rushed forward, knocking me to my knees. I couldn't fight them all off, though I had much expertise. I was taken away, tied up, and dragged through the sand. I knew nobody would risk their life to save just one man. I found myself at their camp, guarded, and often patrolled. And here I sit in my prison cell, so dark and so cold. I knew by now, my fate could only be short and narrow. But at least I knew that I could now live life as a hero
