Masquerade

Who knows the secrets which the masks hide?

Scared of other’s judgments
She secludes herself
With lack of confidence
Wishing she was someone else
But at this black tie affair
All her faults have disappeared
Along with her never ending fear
Behind the mask she has changed
No longer self-conscious
For this brief moment she has changed

Thriving for attention
To be in the spotlight
Is how he spends his days
Star quarterback of the football team
Fulfilling his fathers lifelong dream
But at this special occasion
He wishes he was someone else
Behind the mask he has changed
No longer popular
For this brief moment he has changed

The music begins subtlety
As the dancers take their stance
Overwhelmed by her new found confidence
This is her chance
Asking the mysterious gentleman
If he would like to dance

The orchestra softly plays
And the dancers take the floor
Eger for this is his secret passion
Which he has never told before
An ordinary maiden approaches him and
Gestures toward the floor

Hand in hand they join the others falling into steep
Among the other masked figures
Porcelain silhouettes
They sweep the floor elegantly
Turning many heads
But behind the masks their secrets lie
Who knew the stories that they hide
The song is over and the dance is done
The masquerade is at its end
Saying goodbyes with unwanted departures
But thankful for the time well spent

The next day at school she is herself once again
Hiding behind her books where she confines
Reminiscing about her afternoon in her mind
In the crowded hallways while switching class
She looses her balance and everyone laughs
She gathers her books in great distress
Not caring to worry about the rest
Running away to hide her pain
Knowing they are the ones to gain

At school the next day he is back to himself
Hiding behind his fame in which he confines
Trying to leave the memory of that afternoon behind
In the crowded hallways while switching class
He notices a girl at which everyone laughs
He watches her run away with tears in her eyes
Wondering what is to gain from making her cry
He picks up the her belongings and starts to pursue
Knowing it was the right thing to do

She sets sobbing in front of the school
On a cold metal park bench
When feeling a light tap on her shoulder
Making her involuntarily flinch

He noticed she was crying
And walked slowly to her side
But sadly her tear stained face
With her hands she did hide

He handed her, her belongings
And she thanked him with a stutter
Noticing in her stomach
Butterflies did flutter
For he was cute and popular
And way off limit
She couldn’t help but think
There was something in it

Handing her, her belongings
He noticed that she stuttered
Wondering is there could possibly be
A significant other
For her eyes where grandeur
And her beauty striking
He couldn’t help but think
That her presence was imposing

Not voicing their thoughts
They went their separate way
Not realizing that they hid behind the mask
During the masquerade
