My Wise Friend

My wise friend
will tell you
what someone once said long ago—
Saying,
He who speaks does not know,
And he who knows does not speak.

Yet I took this paradoxical proposal
upon face value,
and spoke no more wisdom to the world.

A week or so later,
a stranger in need asked me for a pearl of wisdom—
And, by now, with my tongue atrophied and anxious,
I compromised my silence
By saying,
He who speaks does not know,
And he who knows does not speak.

"So, you do not know," she declared.
"That is all I can say about it," I replied.

I tell my wise friend that
I haven't had much to say lately.
He replies that he has already said
all that he could possibly say,
and he would only be repeating himself.

"You told me that yesterday," I said.
"There you have it," he concluded.
