Forgetting Eyes

As I continue to stare,
you say you swear,
and your eyes burn brighter,
and your arms grow tighter,
your mouth finds mine,
and we stand, lost for a moment in time.
Then you're gone, I'm left to lament,
you're with another, you're content.
This isn't right,
I look into your forgetting eyes, trying to re-ignite,
the love we once shared,
I find no warmth, and I stand, alone and scared.

As I again look into your forgetting eyes,
I find myself beginning to despise,
myself for losing you,
and you for being untrue,
and all those who said we couldn't,
and that we wouldn't or shouldn't,
and I cursed myself for being stupid,
and believing in something so insipid,
as lasting first love,
and for trying to be above,
those more learned than I.
But it came to pass, that by and by,
that I slowly locked you away.
Yet I still say I love you even today,
'cause though I'm still tart,
you'll always be special in my heart!
