Only a Smile

he walks a thin line between life and death
there is no fear in breathing that last breath
lack of emotion is all we see on his face
quitting before he even begins the race
i haven't seen a shadow of hope in a long while
if only he would smile

anyone can see it's been one of those days
i try to pretend it is only a normal phase
his eyes tell about everything he is feeling
i pray that God would bring his heart healing
he told me once that giving up wasnt his style
all i could do is smile

the cuts are getting deep and the blood is real
his selfishness is coming in for the final kill
and the darkness is welcome to his tired eyes
in the balance of one mental picture does his fate lie
the image wont fade as he stares at the bathroom tile
he only saw her smile

we realize it isnt all perfect from this point on
but i find comfort because some of the pain is gone
no one really knows what kept him alive that night
he never shared about the face that filled his sight
it finally paid off to go the distance for another mile
it only took one smile
