Dreams

Take me far from this miserable place,

Time is not an ally here,

Where walls are sands from an enormous hourglass,

How can I hope to sleep?

Coiled steel betrays my every thought,

With knives in my back so sharp,

Twists to open the bottle once corked,

To read a ransom note.

"We have your heart," cries the paint,

"The cost will be your mind."

I know not if I can bear to pay,

The world for my emotions,

To keep in the box I call a chest,

Lock and key holds no treasure,

Like shiny things those young birds gather,

As they are quite impressive indeed,

In a world of not so shiny truths,

Yet care not I to have these shiny things,

I know they cannot buy me,

...Dreams.

Like diamonds,

Are just an arms length away,

If you know the trick,

Anyone can reach for stones,

Yet so few can make them leap,

Into a sleeper’s open hand,

But does this make them rich?

Does this make them great?

...No.

The only thing one can claim from dreams,

Is sleep,

The only thing one can claim from sleep,

Is tomorrow.

The only thing one can claim from tomorrow,

Is death.

But who would call it death?

I certainly would not,

The world will call it sleep,

With a fancy suit and velvet box,

So before you sleep the world away,

Always enjoy your dreams,

Whether you’re sleeping or not.
