Return unharmed

The day passes, while I look through my window.

The night passes, and I still await for your return.

Another day, scratched in the calendar.

Another night, the phone stays silent.

I watch the news, hoping your name stays

unmentioned. I hear about the chaos of the war,

and hope that the bombs and shootings

are far from where you are.

Please, return to me, return unharmed.

For how long do I have wait,

To hear that you are safe?

How long to see you back home?

How long do I have to wait,

To hear those silly jokes, to hear those

Calming words only you could speak,

To simply hang out with my friend?

Please, return unharmed.

For those of you wondering, I dedicate this poem to one of my best friends Eddie. He's been a whole year in Iraq and I'll admit that I didn't have the courage to write this poem. I was really afraid something might happen to him, but today I received a letter from him saying that he was heading to Kuwait, and later on to the USA. He arrives to North Carolina on the 23rd of October and back home to Puerto Rico, on January! I'm so excited, I can't wait to see him!!
