Big Girls Don't Cry

“Big girls don’t cry”,

Oh what a lie, what a lie.

I hear parents say it again, and again,

To all the innocent little children.

 

I sometimes wonder why, parents don’t want to see the tears,

After all this time, I figured out it’s so they don’t have to face their fears.

So parents think it’s better to make those little girls grow up fast,

Well no tears usually means they have a hell of a past.

 

A little girl comes running, she scraped up her shin,

And momma’s whispering to wipe the tears off her chin.

Well the little girl’s trying to make her momma proud,

But she can’t pull herself together and the sobs are getting loud.

 

Shhhhh, my baby girl, haven’t I told you before, “big girls don’t cry?”

Mamma keeps whispering, please try baby, try.

Well don’t listen little girl, it’s just a lie, what a lie,

You can tell your momma that big girls do to cry.

 

Ten years later and now you’re fourteen,

Tears are pouring down your face, you’re in your room pretending to clean.

Momma’s knocking on the door asking, Baby are you okay?

And as if she could see you, you nod your head and wipe the tears away.

 

She comes in and looks you in the eye,

You know I’m always here for you, that’s no lie.

You smile cause you know it’s the right thing to do,

Inside you hurt cause she can’t tell what’s wrong with you.

 

She walks out and shuts your door,

The tears are pouring out, just more and more.

You’re sitting on your bed,

With every tear that falls, wishing you were dead.

 

And suddenly you realize,

That little phrase was a lie.

Now you’re wishing you were a little girl again,

‘Cause back then you were always smiling.

 

Slowly you think to yourself, “Big girls don’t cry”,

‘Cause now you’re grown up and to cry you have to hide,

Now you know the truth and your feeling sick inside.

It’s the little ones that are strong and hold it in until they die.

Now you’re really crying, cause you know another’s life is being screwed up,

Now you want to tell that child, that she doesn’t need to be tough.
